Abstract
This paper analyses the Platonic proposal of «the healthy city» or «the city of pigs». The aim is to show that Plato’s exaltation of the primitivist ideology is ambiguous, since the seriousness with which he takes it is not exempt from a certain irony, and it is also complex, since his reasons in favour of a return to «a primitive life» coexist with powerful anti-primitivist motives in his philosophy. We propose to interpret the meaning of his proposal of an imaginary primitive life that is austere, simple and peaceful as an alternative to some of the evils of his civilisation that caused him most discontent.
