Abstract
Abordaré aquí el problema de cómo elevar el nivel académico y diversificar los centros de enseñanza e investigación de la antropología. Siendo esta una ciencia inductiva he optado por basarme en el proceso que tuvo lugar en México entre 1965 y 1980. El personaje central de esta historia es Angel Palerm, que para elevar el nivel académico de la disciplina se vio obligado a destruir el monopolio que tenía en el país la Escuela Nacional de Antropología, organizando directamente programas de estudio en la Universidad Iberoamericana y posteriormente en la Universidad Metropolitana. Estos programas se planteaban un triple objetivo: primero, mejorar la formación teórica del profesorado, a través de la contratación de profesores extranjeros y del envío de alumnos becados a estudiar al exterior; segundo, renovar los métodos pedagógicos, rompiendo con el esquema de lección magistral; tercero, preparar al estudiante para la futura investigación y labor profesional, introduciendo el trabajo de campo desde el primer año de carrera. Pasaré revista a algunos obstáculos que se presentaron.
I will discuss here how to improve the academic level and how to diversify the teaching and research of anthropology. Given that this is an inductive science, I have chosen to talk about the process that took place in Mexico between 1965-1980. The main character of this story is Angel Palerm who, just in order to improve the academic level, was compelled to destroy the monopoly that the Escuela Nacional de Antropología had in this country, by directly organizing an anthropological syllabus first at the Universidad Iberoamericana and then at the Universidad Metropolitana. Those syllabus had three purposes: first, improving the theoretical training of teachers, by engaging foreign teachers and sending scholarship holders abroad; second, reorganizing pedagogical methods; and third, training students for their future research and profesional task, by introducing fieldwork in the first year of their studies. As I shall show, some problems turned up, particularly of corporate nature.
