Servicio de Publicaciones, 2011-01-17) Fernández-Molina, Milagros; González, Victoria; del Molino, GemmaPre-primary education has undergone a significant development in Spain, where debates and administrative, educational and legislative changes have taken place. University degrees are also undergoing a process of renewal, mainly through the European convergence process, which has stimulated the development of innovation projects and the design of undergraduate studies. The aim of this study is to describe the initial profile and skills of students upon entering the University of Malaga (Spain) to study the degree of Early Childhood Education. To this end, first-year students answered surveys with questions on their expectations, skills, experience and motivation for university and Early Childhood Education as a degree and a profession. These surveys were administered in four consecutive academic years. We also explored the generational differences on the basis of the year of entry.

Servicio de Publicaciones, 2011-01-17) Córdoba Caro, Luis Gonzalo; García Preciado, Ventura; Luengo Pérez, Luis Miguel; Vizuete Carrizosa, Manuel; Feu Molina, SebastiánThe aim of this study was to analyze the relationship of socio cultural factors on academic performance among students in Secondary Education (ESO) in the city of Badajoz (Spain). In order to do so, a total sample of 1,197 ESO students (49.9% male and 50.1% female) was taken. They participated individually and without help, and answered a questionnaire with personal and family questions which analysed some variables related to these two main topics. Moreover, the final score of all subjects studied during that school year was included. Gender, type of institution, course studied, family structure, family economic status and cultural differences are highly significant. The student profile with a high overall academic performance corresponds to students from private schools, female, from an extended family with a high cultural and economic level.
Servicio de Publicaciones, 2011-01-17) Broc Cavero, Miguel ÁngelIn this research study the relationship between metacognitive learning variables, volitional variables and academic achievement in third-year Psychology of Learning students were analyzed. As a starting point we took the works of Pintrich et al (1991), and McCann & Turner (2004). The variables of previous performance (grades) are the best predictors of final achievement, but if removed, metacognitive variables (Time Management and the Effort Management) and volitional strategies (Negative-Based Incentives) come into play in predicting performance. Volitional variables may be considered as latent variables with an indirect influence over the final grades, but with a direct influence over the learning strategies. Such complex relationships (LISREL) should be more thoroughly researched in the future. No statistical differences between men and women were found in any of the variables. The best variables to discriminate between groups of achievement (high, middle and low) were learning variables, such as time management, effort management and metacognitive self-regulation.
Servicio de Publicaciones, 2011-01-17) Pablos, Juan Manuel de; Colás Bravo, Pilar Sara; González, Maria TeresaThis article presents the scientific foundations of the Educational Well-being Questionnaire applied to the development of innovations in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in schools. We establish the validity and reliability of this questionnaire using Cronbach alpha and factor analysis statistical techniques. Our sample is made up of 322 questionnaires to teachers of schools that carry out innovations with ICTs in four regions of Spain: Andalusia, Extremadura, Canary Islands and Basque Country. The results indicate that this instrument is valid and reliable to measure the Educational Well-Being. Also, it identifies the Well-Being variables associated with good practices with ICT innovation.
Servicio de Publicaciones, 2011-01-17) Elizondo Montemayor, LeticiaThe profile of an academic director working in a Higher Education institution should be based on competences. This manuscript describes the role, responsibilities, fields of knowledge, abilities and habits, which a competence-based profile should be made up of, following a tri-circular model. The three areas of competence are: 1) Doing the right thing; 2) Doing things right; and 3) The right person doing the tasks. The first area includes five intellectual and technical competences: 1. Knowledge of the institution; 2. Awareness of strengths and weaknesses; 3. Knowledge of educational models; 4. Teacher training and student affairs; and, 5. Administrative abilities. The second area involves 3 intellectual, emotional, analytical and creative competences: 6. Understanding of the main principles; 7. Leadership and effective communication; 8. Critical thinking and decision making. The third area includes 2 personal competences: 9. Role of the AD; 10. Ethics and personal development. This paper describes the elements of these 10 competences.
Servicio de Publicaciones, 2011-01-17) Moya Martínez, María del Valle; Hernández Bravo, Juan Rafael; Hernández Bravo, José Antonio; Cózar Gutiérrez, RamónThis article analyzes the relationship between learning styles and the use of ICT in training university students. The study presents a quantitative approach and a non-experimental design. For this study, the REATIC questionnaire was designed and validated. After data collection, statistical tests and correlational studies were carried out in order to determine the relationship between a learning style, ICT, gender and university degree. The sample was made up of 146 second-year students of Pre-school and Primary Education studying in the Teacher Training School of Albacete (Spain). The results showed significant differences in favour of male students and in the Primary Education degree.
Servicio de Publicaciones, 2011-01-17) Said Rücker, Patricia Beatriz T.The aim was to study whether the education level and occupation of the student's parents were related to the approval of the introductory subject influencing the admission to the university. Parent´s education level and occupation of 497 applicant students were determined. Those who approved were recorded. Differences were found among paren´t education level related to subject approval, the latter was negatively associated to father´s complete and incomplete secondary level, and to mother´s tertiary level, and was positively associated to father´s and mother´s university level. There was negative association between the subject approval and father´s occupation as employee and independent worker, and positive association to father and mother university proffesionals. To have university educated parents who work in their own proffesions would be stimulating for the students, promoting the subject approval. Parent´s education level and occupation would be relevant factors for student´s admission to the university.
Servicio de Publicaciones, 2011-01-17) Castro Nuño, Mercedes; Gómez-Calero Valdés, María de la Palma; Pablo-Romero Gil-Delgado, María del Pópulo; Sanz Díaz, María Teresa; Yñiguez Ovando, RocíoThis paper describes the experience of research in teaching developed to improve motivation, interest and learning of students enrolled in "Introduction to Economics" for the first year in the Business Administration Degree at the University of Seville (Spain). This experience was about establishing a system of continuous assessment using the interactive response Educlick software. The use of this instrument has allowed not only the introduction of a periodic surveillance testing, but also the monitoring of student attendance and the definition of their level of participation. The results obtained are measured with regard to three learning parameters: class attendance (the use of a continuous assessment method generally improved class attendance), academic performance (the pass rate of the total number of students was 10 percentage points higher than those that went through the traditional final examination), and assessment of the new methodology (the students surveyed mostly preferred the electronic control response system).
Servicio de Publicaciones, 2011-01-17) Santos Rego, Miguel A.; Lorenzo Moledo, Mar; Priegue Caamaño, DianaThis paper is aimed at studying the importance that immigrant families place on the education of their children. After analysing the main problems that affect the education of immigrant children, we present the results of a research carried out on a sample of 111 immigrant families whose children are enrolled in compulsory education schools. Our purpose was to determine whether the family's ethnic and cultural background have an influence on the importance given to certain aspects of education. To this end, we conducted a comparative study on families from Morocco (n = 22) and Latin America (n = 73). The results confirm that the ethnic and cultural background do not play a very important role in the importance that parents place on education. It is stressed that there is a need to look for other factors which may have an influence on the importance that immigrant parents place on their children's education.
- PublicationOpen AccessLa tutoría sanitaria: mapa funcional ¿amenaza u oportunidad?(Universidad de Murcia. Servicio de Publicaciones, 2011-01-17) Martínez Clares, Pilar; Martínez Juárez, MiriamThe medical tutor is a figure rarely mentioned in the regulation of the residency system of our country, and his/her tasks are both too general and unspecific. The current lack of studies in the medical context, which enhance the figure of the tutor from a competence-related and qualifying perspective, motivated us to present this article. Our aim is to describe the main purpose and the functions of the medical tutorials in order to find out the units and elements of competence of tutors of trainee specialists (tutor of residents) in the Region of Murcia (Spain). We intend to do this with the aid of a Functional Map and the Functional Analysis methodology in order to make advances in the identification of competences and in the need to define a professional profile following a process that develops from the general to the specific.
Servicio de Publicaciones, 2011-01-17) Raccanello, Kristiano; Garñudo Estrada, León; Herrera Escalante, Andrea; Uribe Cruz, GabrielSocio economic problems exacerbate school drop-out that harms youths by limiting their knowledge and future development. Scholars have investigated both the variables linked to school attendance and the problems faced by impaired children. However, it has not yet been considered whether school attendance is harmed when parents are impaired. In order to partially fill this gap, we test the hypothesis that parental disability increases school drop-out through a sample of 598 youths between 14 and 17 years old in the municipality of San Andrés Cholula (Mexico). The instrumental variables probit model estimates emphasize the importance of the mother's role, because when she is impaired or has a low level of schooling, a drop in children assistance is more likely to occur. However, children living in a mother-headed household show higher school attendance.
Servicio de Publicaciones, 2011-01-17) León, José Antonio; Solari, Mariana; Olmos, Ricardo; Escudero, InmaculadaIn recent years, the study of inferences has become so relevant that now is considered the core of the comprehension and interpretation of reality and, therefore, one of the cornerstones of human cognition. Given its importance in understanding processes, studies were initially focused on learning more about how they occur and what their features are, providing various taxonomies that address the number and type of inferences that take place in everyday situations. There are not, however, previous studies that analize other triggers to make inferences such as specific aims within a social context, or analyzed under the influence of a sociocultural theory. This work has three aims: analyzing the extent to which different inferential patterns are generated when the aim of the reading is telling a peer (symmetrical) or a child (asymmetric); to examine whether the type of text (narrative or expository) influences inference activation; and, thirdly, to assess whether this possible effect of reading aims (symmetrical and asymmetrical) occurs similarly on both types of tasks: using a verbal protocol and an oral summary task. Ten university students conformed the sample of this study and had to read two texts (one narrative and one expository). The results pointed out that when reading has a social and communicative purpose, as it is to have the reader explain the content of the text to an eight year old boy , there are more explanatory inferences, an accommodation with immediate language use, a greater number of paraphrases, as well as an addition of new ideas when they are asked to summarize the text. These results shed light on a subject that had never been previously researched: how communicative reading aims may have effects on the amount and type of inferences made during reading. Moreover, our purpose is also to show how certain educational implications arise from our study.
