Description
Abstract
----------------
Religious tourism as a social and economic phenomenon has gained great interest in recent decades. In Spain, along with the well-known routes to Santiago de Compostela (Camino de Santiago), other pilgrimage routes are being promoted, especially to Caravaca de la Cruz and Santo Toribio de Liébana. This paper examines the territorial implementation of the “Camino Espiritual del Sur”, one of the recently created pilgrimage routes to Caravaca de la Cruz (Region of Murcia). It is a route of more than 300 kilometres that begins in the town of Guadix (Granada). The area through which the route runs is one of the most depopulated areas in Spain, so the opening of this route could undoubtedly be a dynamising element for its tourist activity. The results reveal that this route has great potential to become one of the most important pilgrimage routes in southern Spain. The lack of hotel infrastructure is one of its major handicaps. Therefore, greater institutional support is needed to ensure that these routes have greater development, visibility and improvements in the rest stops between urban centres.
