Abstract
ABSTRACT: This article analyzes the brothel conceived as an ideal place for the study of representations of sex-gender system, specifically related to the management of heterosexual masculinities. The processes of communication and interaction that occur in this place allow a socio-historical analysis of taboos, stereotypes and politico-ideological systems. As theoretical and methodological supports, it has been used the school of history of mentalities, the sociology of everyday life and the sociology of space. The brothel, as a place of sociability with important external connotations, refers to an “imagery of desire” in which the “everyday self” is presented and, most important, where expectations of action and behaviour are managed within a framework of identity (un)consciously represented.
