Abstract
El estudio del estilo dentro de la tradición variacionista en la Sociolingüística ha
recibido escasa atención hasta muy recientemente, a pesar de su naturaleza
absolutamente capital en la variación: ha sido tratado exclusivamente como una
mera variable independiente (parámetro extralingüístico) en las correlaciones
entre variables lingüísticas y extralingüísticas, en lugar de como un recurso
sociolingüístico donde poder investigar la gestión de estilos por parte del
hablante, su uso efectivo, y cómo éstos reflejan y transmiten significado social—
lo cual es tanto social como lingüístico. La variabilidad presente en una
determinada comunidad de habla no es sólo una cuestión de diferencias socio-
demográficas existentes entre los informantes y su habla (variación inter-
hablante), sino también –y crucialmente– de diferentes hablas en el mismo
informante (variación intra-hablante) según los contextos situacionales en que se
encuentre, el tipo de audiencia o la imagen personal que desee proyectar. El
propósito del presente trabajo es ofrecer un recorrido crítico por los principales
modelos teóricos de variación estilística desarrollados en la Sociolingüística:
Audiomonitorización, Diseño de Audiencia, Diseño de Guión, Modelo Funcional de
Registros y Diseño de Hablante.
The study of style within the variationist tradition of Sociolinguistics has been ancillary until very recently despite this centrality in sociolinguistic variation: it has been merely used as an independent variable (extralinguistic parameter) in the correlation of linguistic and extralinguistic variables, rather than as a sociolinguistic resource where to investigate speakers’ style management, its effective use, and how style reflects and transmits social meaning –which is both social and linguistic. The variability present within a given speech community is not just a matter of socio-demographic differences among speakers as reflected on their speech (inter-speaker variation), but also –and crucially–different speech styles based on situational contexts, audienceship and/or the image intended to project. The aim of this paper is to provide a critical overview of the main different Sociolinguistics: theoretical approaches Audio-monitorisation, developed of stylistic Audience Design, variation Script in Design, Functional Register and Speaker Design models.
