- PublicationRestrictedComparison of muscle activity while using different input devices in digital pathology.(0001-01-22) Alcaraz-Mateos, Eduardo; Hernández-Gómez, Rubén; Rojas Calvente, Estefanía; Sánchez-Campoy, Nicolás; Martínez González-Moro, Ignacio; Caballero-Alemán, Fuensanta; Poblet, Enrique; Oftalmología, Optometría, Otorrinolaringología y Anatomía PatológicaThe high prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders in pathologists, together with the current trend towards the digitization of pathology, prompted us to study the different types of input devices employed during the revision of whole slide images, in order to investigate the pattern and extent of muscle activity involved in their use.
- PublicationOpen AccessChronic follicular pancreatitis: a space occupying lesion with spontaneous resolution.(0001-01-24) Sánchez Navarro, Elena; López Martín, Aurelio; Alcaraz Mateos, Eduardo; Molina Muñoz, José Manuel; Egio Ros, Marta; Morales López, Germán; Pérez-Cuadrado Martínez, Enrique; Oftalmología, Optometría, Otorrinolaringología y Anatomía PatológicaFollicular pancreatitis (FP) is an extremely odd entity characterized by the presence of a pseudotumor that histologically presents lymphoid aggregates and germinal centers. The authors present the case of a 67-year-old woman with epigastric pain and jaundice. Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) was performed, revealing a 14x15 mm hypoechoic area with irregular edges in the head of the pancreas. The in situ cytological study showed polymorphic lymphoid cellularity, without atypia suggesting neoplasia. The cell block and the immunohistochemical study showed a polyclonal population with a pattern suggestive of FP. The patient presented spontaneous clinical improvement. The EUS follow up three months later shown pancreatic parenchyma with homogeneous echogenicity and no space occupying lesions were indentified. Since the diagnosis of FP has been reached after surgery in most cases, the treatment is not well established. However, no recurrences have been reported after surgery and spontaneous resolution has been observed in incomplete resections, which suggests the indication for conservative management. Diagnostic EUS has a fundamental role in the differential diagnosis between FP and pancreatic neoplasms, two entities with very different prognosis, and makes it possible to avoid, in the case of FP, unnecessary surgeries with the associated morbidity and mortality.
- PublicationOpen AccessHow do cytopathologists learn fine needle aspiration techniques? An international survey.(0001-01-25) Alcaraz-Mateos, Eduardo; Exposito-Afonso, Idaira Jael; Labiano-Miravalles, Tania; Pijuan, Lara; Temprana-Salvador, Jordi; Zhao, Qing; Jiang, Xiaoyin Sara; Oftalmología, Optometría, Otorrinolaringología y Anatomía PatológicaFine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is a widely accepted diagnostic technique, but performance varies according to expertise. Little is known about variation in FNAC training practices worldwide. We surveyed pathologists using social media networks to determine FNAC training practices internationally.
- PublicationOpen AccessSatiety hormone secretion induced by a carob-based formulation (Csat®) after simulated gastrointestinal digestion and colonic fermentation in STC-1 cells(Elsevier, 0001-07-26) Benito-Vázquez, Iván; Rosell, María de los Ángeles; Lates-Profir, Natalia; Díez Municio, Marina; Moreno, Francisco Javier; Frontela Saseta, María del Carmen; López Nicolás, Rubén; Tecnología de Alimentos, Nutrición y BromatologíaCsat® is a carob-derived based product standardized in galactomannans, inositols, and gallic acid, with potential applications in weight management and metabolic health. This study evaluated the effects of Csat® on satietyrelated enteroendocrine signalling after simulated gastrointestinal digestion and colonic fermentation. A standardized INFOGEST in vitro digestion model was combined with batch colonic fermentation using human faecal inoculum, and the resulting fractions were tested in STC-1 cells to quantify glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and cholecystokinin (CCK) secretion. Digestive stability of key bioactive compounds was assessed by HPLC-MS. Undigested Csat® did not stimulate hormone secretion, whereas gastric digestion induced the strongest enteroendocrine response, significantly increasing both GLP-1 and CCK release. The intestinal soluble phase maintained a moderate stimulatory effect. During colonic fermentation, galactomannans were extensively degraded, while pinitol remained stable and gallic acid showed variable recovery. Fermentation kinetics revealed active microbial metabolism, with early fermentation associated with the highest endocrine response. GLP-1 and CCK secretion peaked at 4 h fermentation and progressively declined at later stages. Overall, Csat® showed a marked phase-dependent endocrine activity, with gastrointestinal processing and early microbial fermentation generating the most bioactive fractions. These findings support the potential of Csat® to modulate satiety-related pathways through coordinated digestion- and microbiota-derived mechanisms.
- PublicationOpen AccessFolate fortification of white and whole-grain bread by adding Swiss chard and spinach. Acceptability by consumers(Elsevier, 0016-05-14) López Nicolás, Rubén; Frontela Saseta, María del Carmen; González-Abellán, Raquel; Barado-Piqueras, Ana; Perez-Conesa, Darío; Ros Berruezo, Gaspar; Tecnología de Alimentos, Nutrición y BromatologíaThe aim of this work was to study the effect of bread-making on the content of endogenous folate of white and whole-grain bread fortified with either Swiss chard or spinach at 20 g/100 g and 40 g/100 g measured by HPLC (H4-folate and 5-CH3-H4-folate); and to assess the sensory acceptability of folatefortified breads compared to non-fortified breads. The fortification of breads with 20 g/100 g and 40 g/100 g vegetables significantly (p < 0.001) increased the total folate content (from 19.9 to 57.9 mg/ 100 g in white bread and from 37.4 to 75.5 mg/100 g in whole-grain bread). Moreover, 40 g/100 g Swiss chard- and spinach-fortified breads obtained higher scores in overall acceptability than 20 g/100 g fortified or control bread for both white and whole-grain breads. The consumption of two servings (56 g each) per day of 40 g/100 g fortified bread would meet the daily folate requirements by 14.3e21.8% in adults and 9.6e14.5% in some special states like women of child-bearing age.

- PublicationRestrictedOsteoblastoma esclerosante multifocal yuxtacortical (Osteoma osteoide multicéntrico): a propósito de un caso localizado en acetábulo(Elsevier, 1984) Pastor, F. A.; Trigueros, M.; Martínez Díaz, F.; Marsa, J.; Ortuño, G.; Oftalmología, Optometría, Otorrinolaringología y Anatomía PatológicaA case of a multifocal sc/erosing osteob/astoma is described, localized in the base of the right hip's acetabulum. The tumor affected a 18 year o/d girl and was rather large (6 cm.). According to a previous x-ray of the patient it developed during tw_o years. The c/inica/, radiological and histological features of this case coincide with criteria for both Osteoid osteoma and osteoblastoma, so that a common denomination for this group of lesions would be desirable.
- PublicationRestrictedMixoma de mama. Estudio citopatológico de un caso(Elsevier, 1985) Pérez Guillermo, M.; Pastor Quirante, F.; Martínez Díaz, F.; Hernández Barceló, E.; Ortuño Pacheco, G.; Oftalmología, Optometría, Otorrinolaringología y Anatomía PatológicaA rapidly growing tumor of one month evolution in the right mammary gland of a 12 year old girl was diagnosed by fine needle P.A.B. and interpreted as probable myxoma. An enuc/eation was suggested. The later histopathologic and electronomicroscopic study confirmed that within an abundan/ mould of acid mucopolysaccharides there existed a fibroblastic proliferation. A cytological differential diagnosis against different entities with myxoid stromas was established and the histopathologic similarity with the so called myxoma of nervous sheaths is underlined. We stress the uti/ity of the fine needle P.A. B. for the diagnosis and the therapeutic planning of mammary pathology. -----------
