Abstract
Esta tesis doctoral propone un método de integración, evaluación y mejora continua de la sostenibilidad en organizaciones software desde sus procesos de negocio. La investigación se articula en tres pilares fundamentales: (1) el método Gaia, diseñado para evaluar el nivel de sostenibilidad de una organización e instanciado específicamente para organizaciones software con la propuesta de un conjunto de procesos de negocio y de indicadores específicos; (2) una revisión sistemática de la literatura que identifica indicadores basados en las dimensiones del Manifiesto de Karlskrona, consolidando un repositorio reutilizable de indicadores de sostenibilidad; y (3) la herramienta de soporte al método denominada GaiaTool, un prototipo de herramienta de auditoría que automatiza las actividades del modelo de procesos del método Gaia.
La validación del método Gaia se realizó mediante un caso de estudio en una institución de educación superior que cuenta con líneas de productos de software para la industria, la administración pública, la salud y la educación, mientras que la herramienta GaiaTool fue evaluada por parte de profesionales en organizaciones software a través de un cuestionario basado en el Modelo de Aceptación de la Tecnología. Los resultados demuestran que tanto el método como la herramienta facilitan la evaluación de la sostenibilidad basada en indicadores, optimizando la toma de decisiones, la comunicación con las partes interesadas y la competitividad organizacional en el ámbito del desarrollo de software.
This doctoral thesis proposes a method for the integration, assessment, and continuous improvement of sustainability within software organizations, leveraging their business processes as a fundamental baseline. The research is structured around three core pillars: first, the Gaia method, designed to evaluate sustainability maturity levels and specifically instantiated for software organizations throughout the proposal of a set of business processes and specific indicators; second, a systematic literature review that identifies indicators aligned with the dimensions of the Karlskrona Manifesto, thereby consolidating a formal and reusable repository of sustainability indicators; and third, GaiaTool, a prototype that automates the activities defined within the Gaia process model. The validation of the Gaia method was conducted through a case study in a higher education institution which has software product lines for industry, public administration, health and education, while the GaiaTool was evaluated by professionals in software organizations via a survey based on the Technology Acceptance Model. The results show that the synergy between the proposed method and the tool helps indicator-based sustainability assessment, optimizing strategic decision-making, stakeholder communication, and organizational competitiveness within the software development domain.
