Abstract
El trabajo transgresor del artista y compositor John Cage es ampliamente
conocido. Rompedor de las reglas convencionales en música, traspasó
fronteras disciplinares acabando por completar lo comenzado por Marcel
Duchamp en el campo de las artes. Así, su constante replanteamiento de
todo lo que conlleva la tradicional cultura occidental europea le llevó nada
menos que a querer dinamitar la base musical de esta sirviéndose de una
de sus manifestaciones más distintivas, la ópera. Sin embargo, lo que en un
principio empezó siendo un ataque frontal pasó, poco a poco, a convertirse
en un entendimiento que desembocó en la aceptación y el respeto. Este
proceso evolutivo es el que se estudia –desde la perspectiva de las artes
plásticas– en esta investigación. Evidentemente, existen muchos más
prismas desde los que enfocar este trabajo de cinco «óperas» de Cage.
Por ello, lo que se pretende aquí, es mostrar uno de ellos con el fin de
que suponga un comienzo para posteriores investigaciones que amplíen
el conocimiento de la teoría del compositor pues recordemos que lo
importante de su obra es precisamente el hecho de que nos hace pensar.
ABSTRACT: The transgressive work by the artist and composer John Cage is well known. Ground-breaking of conventional rules in music, he overstepped disciplinary boundaries to complete what Marcel Duchamp started in the field of arts. Thus, his constant rethinking of all traditional western European culture brought him, no less, to want to dynamite its musical basis making use of one of its most distinctive expressions, the opera. However, what initially began as a frontal attack became, little by little, an understanding that led into acceptance and respect. This evolutionary process is studied –from the perspective of plastic arts– in this research. Obviously, there are many more angles from which to approach us to this Cage’s work of five “operas”. Therefore, the aim here is to show one of them to assume a beginning for further researches in order to extend the knowledge of this composer’s theory since we should remember that the important thing of his work is precisely the fact it makes us think.
