- PublicationOpen AccessThe influence of perceived social support on academic engagement among adolescents: the mediating role of self-efficacy(Universidad de Murcia. Servicio de Publicaciones, 2024) Tortosa Martínez, Begoña María; Pérez-Fuentes, María del Carmen; Molero Jurado, María del MarAcademic engagement is influenced by environmental and personal factors, such as perceivedsocial support and self-efficacy. Both fac-tors have become one of the most important elements in the academic context, due to their relationships with the school adjustment of adolescents. The objective of this study was to analyze the influence of the perceived social support of friends and family on academic engagement, as well as to check whether self-efficacy plays a mediating role in the relationship between both variables. A cross-sectional descriptive study was performed. The sample consisted of 802secondary school students, with an average age of 13.65 years (SD = 1.24) (where 50.6% were women and 49.4% men). The results showed the existence of positive relationships between perceived social support and the dimensions of academic engagement. The mediation models showed the direct effect of perceived social support on academic engagement and the indirect effect of perceived so-cial support on academic engagement when self-efficacy mediates in this relationship. In conclusion, it is recommended to promote self-efficacy and a positive academic path, due to the involvement of the perceived social support of friends and family in the school path and engagement to stu-dies.
- PublicationOpen AccessFear of cancer recurrence inventory (FCRI) in Spanish: validation in Mexican women with breast cancer(Universidad de Murcia. Servicio de Publicaciones, 2024) Juárez-García, Dehisy Marisol; Vázquez -Esseso, Mónica Beatriz; Gálvez-Hernández, Lizette; Bazan, Jorge; Simard, SébastienBackground/Objective.The Fear Cancer Recurrence Inventory (FCRI) evaluates fear cancer recurrence multidimensionally and proposes a clinical cutoff point. However, there has yet to be a translated Spanish ver-sion of the FCRI to date. This study aims to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the FRCI in women who completed primary treatment for breast cancer. Material and Methods.Recommendations of the International Test Commission were followed for cultural adaptation. Two hundred sixty-seven women who completed primary treatment for breast cancer participated in and responded to the Spanish ver-sion of the FCRI and the Supportive Care Needs Survey. Results. Two models are explored using AFC, the second order model χ2 (807, n= 265) = 1500.3, p< .001, χ2/gl = 1.85, CFI = .89, TLI = .89, RMSEA = .057 (90% confidence interval = .052–.061), and the seven related factors model χ2(791, n= 265) = 1391.7, p< .001, χ2/gl = 1.75, CFI = .91, TLI = .90, RMSEA = .053 (90% confidence interval = .049–.058) obtained an optimal fit. Adequate-to-good Cronbach's alpha values and the interclass correlation index were acceptable for five of the seven dimensions (.68 to .83). Conclusion. The Spanish version of the FCRI has psychometric properties suitable for clinical and research use in Mexican populations.
- PublicationOpen AccessChange in Maslow’s hierarchy of basic needs: evidence from the study of well-being in Mexico(Universidad de Murcia. Servicio de Publicaciones, 2024) Méndez, Alfonso; Rojas, MarianoMaslow's pyramid is a symbol that has endured in the image of psychologists, scientists, businessmen and politicians around the world; its premise expresses a hierarchy of needs, but sometimes this idea is con-fused with sequentiality and ascendancy of satisfaction that begins with physiological needs and ends with self-actualization. This article examines empirically the hierarchy of basic needs from the perspective of subjective well-being in Mexico. The analyzes are carried out with a sample of 38,560 cases from the Mexican population, using a stepwise forward multiple linear regression model. The main finding is that the needs for love and belonging are the ones that explain satisfaction with life to a greater degree, the hierarchy proposed by Maslow changes insofar as its importance for subjective well-being. The relevance of belonging needs as explanatory fac-tor of well-being in Mexico is discussed
- PublicationOpen AccessPositive Psychological Functioning Scale in Spanish Adolescents (PPF-A)(Universidad de Murcia. Servicio de Publicaciones, 2024) Merino, Mª Dolores; Privado, JesúsWe are presenting the adaptation and validation of a Positive Psychological Functioning scale in Spanish adolescents in a sample of 1,858 (M= 14.50 years, SD= 2.87 years), previously developed for adults (Merino & Privado, 2015b). The adaptation presents a hierarchical structure of one general factor and 11 of first order that suitably explain the data (GFI = 0.966, NFI = 0.966, SRMR = 0.053). The reliability (internal consistency and test-retest) is adequate. Evidence of convergent and discriminant validity of the test was found with other measures of subjective well-being, psychological well-being, positive and negative affect, and personality. The test has predictive validity on clinical symptoms (R2= 0.17) and there are no differences in the measure based on sex and the period of adolescence considered (early, middle and late). Finally, scales for the sample evaluated are provided
- PublicationOpen AccessAcceptability and feasibility of a meaning-focused intervention at work: A case series study(Universidad de Murcia. Servicio de Publicaciones, 2024) Ríos, Diana C.; Hervas, GonzaloThe concept of meaning in life is fundamental in well-being research, yet its exploration in applied settings remains limited. This study aimed to assess the feasibility and acceptability of a meaning-focused intervention in the workplace. We implemented a six-week meaning in life intervention that targeted enhancing coherence, purpose, and significance in both personal and professional domains. The participants included 9 workers from the Spanish armed forces who voluntarily participated in the intervention. We utilized a case study design to evaluate the intervention's feasibility and acceptability. Attendance rates were high, with 77.78% of participants expressing overall satisfaction with the intervention. We analyzed pre-and post-intervention data on participants' levels of meaning in life, meaningful work, burnout, engagement, well-being, and depression. Significant changes were observed in 33% of the sample regarding meaning in life and in 22% concerning meaningful work, professional efficacy, and overall well-being.This study demonstrates the feasibility and acceptability of our meaning-focused intervention, suggesting its potential efficacy. Through case series studies, we have highlighted the importance of cultivating meaning in life as an essential skill in today's world, crucial for maintaining robust mental health in the face of adversities.
- PublicationOpen AccessPsychometric characteristics of core FertiQoL questionnaire in a Spanish sample of infertile women(Universidad de Murcia. Servicio de Publicaciones, 2024) Bueno-Sánchez, Lidia; Alhambra-Borrás, Tamara; Bonilla-Campos, Amparo Bonilla-Campos; Durá-Ferrandis, EstrellaBackground: Fertility diagnosis and treatment have an impact on the quality of life (QoL) of individuals. FertiQoL is an internationally de-veloped questionnaire to measure fertility-specific QoL. Obtaining reliable information on the impact of fertility issues enables social and health care systems to develop value-centered integrated care. Objective: The aim of the present study is to examine the dimensionality, validity and reliability of Core FertiQol in a sample of Spanish women undergoing fertility treat-ment. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted, administering the Core FertiQoL questionnaire to 564 women with fertility problems. De-scriptive analyses were performed on sociodemographic and clinical data of the sample. The psychometric properties of the FertiQoL were tested by performing confirmatory factor analyses, calculating the average values of the variance extracted, validity, reliability and correlation coefficients be-tween scales. Results: Four factors (Emotional, Mind/Body, Relational and Social) were obtained. All statistics presented adequate values (RMSEA and SRMR lower than 0.09 and CFI and TLI higher than 0.9). Reliability was demonstrated with the CRindex of each factor higher than 0.7 and the AVE higher than 0.5. Conclusions: Core FertiQol presents an acceptable ad-justment for Spanish women with fertility problems. It offers a communi-cation channel between professionals and patients, as well as accurate in-formation in its subscales on areas that may reflect QoL impairment. Core FertiQol is an instrument that allows the identification of areas requiring support, providing valuable information for the design of efficient social-health value-centered programs for people with infertility.
- PublicationOpen AccessHow to proceed when both normality and sphericity are violated in repeated measures ANOVA(Universidad de Murcia. Servicio de Publicaciones, 2024) Blanca, María J.; Alarcón, Rafael; Arnau, Jaume; García-Castro, F. Javier; Bono, RoserAdjusted F-tests have typically been proposed as an alternative to the F-statistic in repeated measures ANOVA. Despite considerable re-search, it remains unclear how these statistics perform under simultaneous violation of normality and sphericity. Accordingly, our aim here was to conduct a detailed examination of Type I error and power of the F-statistic and the Greenhouse-Geisser (F-GG) and Huynh-Feldt (F-HF) adjustments, manipulating the number of repeated measures (3-6), sample size (10-300), sphericity (Greenhouse-Geisser epsilon estimator, , from its lower to upper limit), and distribution shape (slight to extreme deviations from normality). The findings show that the behavior of F-GGand F-HFdepends on the degree of violation of both normality, sphericity, and sample size. Overall, we suggest using F-GG under violation of sphericity and slight or moderate deviations from normality in all sample size; with severe deviations from both normality and sphericity F-GGmay be used with a sample size larger than 10; and with extreme deviation from both normali-ty and sphericity this statistic may be used with a sample size larger than 30. In the event of discrepant results between F-GGand F-HF, the choice depends on the value.
- PublicationOpen AccessAge/Order of Acquisition influences at early stages of visual word processing: Evidence from homophonic formal priming in Spanish and English(Universidad de Murcia. Servicio de Publicaciones, 2024) Pérez-Sánchez, Miguel Á.; Marín, Javier; Izura, CristinaWords learned first or earlier in life are processed faster, with more accuracy, and are more resistant to brain injury than words learned some time later. This phenomenon is called the age-of-acquisition (AoA) effect. Current accounts of the AoA effect place its influence in the semantic system (i.e., the semantic hypothesis), or in the irregular connections formed between representations (i.e., the arbitrary mapping hypothesis). In this study, we tested the predictions derived from these hypotheses on visual word recognition using a formal masked priming paradigm with short SOA (43 ms) and two lexical decision tasks: one in Spanish and one in English. The AoA of the target words and the orthographic and phonological relationship between primes and targets were manipulated. Results from LMM analyses showed the main effects of AoA and phonological priming and an interaction where phonological priming affected only the recognition of late-acquired words. Neither the semantic nor the arbitrary mapping hypotheses fully explain these findings. Alternative accounts such as the phonological completeness or the sensorimotor hypotheses are dis-cussed
- PublicationOpen AccessLevel of Expressed Emotion Scale: Spanish validation for the general adolescent population and development of a short version(Universidad de Murcia. Servicio de Publicaciones, 2024) Aguado, Verónica; Sorrel, Miguel A.; Corral, Susana; Martínez-Pampliega, AnaExpressed emotion is a construct that has so far been studied in a clinical population, although this work proposes its study in adolescent population without psychopathology. It has three aims: 1) To analyse the psychometric characteristics of the Level of Expressed Emotion Scale in the relationship of the Spanish adolescents with their father and their mother, considering different response format (dichotomic and polytomic); (2) To develop a short version of the scale; (3) To study the validity of the instrument as a measure of emotional climate of normative families. Participants were 827 adolescents from 12 to 17 years old. Data analysis included exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modelling. Results suggested a 4-factor structure in the short version composed by 16 items, with adequate psychometric properties. This is presented as an innovative and appropriate tool for the assessment of the emotional family climate, both for researchers and clinicians
- PublicationOpen AccessNumber sense and academic buoyancy among middle school students: A serial mediation model of mathematical metacognition awareness and math anxiety(Universidad de Murcia. Servicio de Publicaciones, 2024) Aksu, Zeki; Kul, Ümit; Satıcı, Seydi AhmetThe present study examined whether number sense was related to academic buoyancy and whether this relationship was mediated by mathematical metacognition awareness and mathematics anxiety. Data was gathered from 231 students in grade 7 and 8 middle schools through selfreport measures of number sense, academic buoyancy, metacognition awareness, and math anxiety. The results revealed a significant positive association between number sense and mathematical metacognition awareness, as well as a significant negative association between number sense and math anxiety. Moreover, results indicated that number sense facilitated academic buoyancy via mathematical metacognition awareness and then math anxiety. These findings contribute to the understanding of how these factors may impact academic buoyancy in middle school students.
- PublicationOpen AccessDeterminants of parental behavior of fathers of primary school-aged children in Croatia(Universidad de Murcia. Servicio de Publicaciones, 2024) Hanzec Marković, Ivana; Pavlić, Marija; Brajša-Žganec, AndrejaThe aim of this study was, following Belsky’s process model of parenting, to examine certain individual characteristics of the child (gender, age), individual characteristics of the father (personality traits) and contextual sources of stress and support (relationship satisfaction) as possible determinants of paternal behavior. In addition, the mediating role of relationship satisfaction in the relationship between personality traits and paternal practices was examined. Participants were 988 fathers (Mage= 43.66, SD= 5.41), whose at least one child was between the ages of 8 and 13. The Parental Behavior Questionnaire (URP29), the IPIP15 Personality Questionnaire and the Marriage/Relationship Satisfaction Scale were used. The results showed that paternal support was directly positively predicted by Extraversion; both directly and indirectly, through relationship satisfaction, positively predicted by Consciousness, Agreeableness, and Intellect, and only indirectly negatively predicted by Neuroticism. Together, these predictors explained 36.2% of the paternal support variance. Paternal restric-tive control was negatively predicted by the child’s age and gender, Consciousness and Agreeableness (with these personality traits having only small indirect effect through relationship satisfaction), and positively pre-dicted by Neuroticism (with both direct and small indirect effect). A total of 12.3% of the paternal restrictive control variance was explained by these predictors. This study provides information about parenting, especially fathers’ behavior, in a less researched period of child development.
