The connection between art and the city in Italy is a rich and complex theme, deeply rooted in history and culture. This relationship has led to the recent transformation of urban public spaces into contemporary art laboratories, fostering a sense of belonging and critical reflection on the city. In this context, Giuliano Briganti and Luisa Laureati commissioned Affinità. Cinque artisti a San Gimignano starting in 1991, a gallery of contemporary sculptures created by Italian artists associated with Arte Povera, scattered throughout the public spaces of the historic center of San Gimignano (Italy). Following the principles of contextual art, as theorized by Paul Ardenne, the exhibition aimed to establish a dialogue on aesthetic affinities between the city’s medieval past and its present, through contemporary “infiltrations” that continue to revitalize public space today, creating an active experience.
