Abstract
In the following article we will analyse the representations of animals and creatures on the reverse of numismatics from the central mints of the emperor Publius Licinius Gallienus (253-268). Through a quantitative study, we will examine the 95 different types of animals and creatures present in the central numismatics of the emperor and minted during his 15 years of reign. Thus, we will discuss, firstly, the importance given by modern historiography to the socalled “animal series”, inserting them into the historical context of the years 267 and 268. Secondly, we will find out which are the most represented beasts on the reverses of the different numismatics. We will also try to explain the motivations behind each representation, contextualising each animal or creature within the public self-representation of one of the most important and long-lived emperors of the 3rd century.
