Description
Abstract
The main problem to the study of artificial caves has been the settlement of dates to frame the phenomenon and each cave in particular. The aim of this paper is to establish the data in an appropriate way. The methodology used is the collection and systematization of the main achievements made by researchers. To start, we will remember the excavations of caves made by Buddhist monks from the 3rd century on. To continue, we will consider the Roman graves in caves, besides those of the catacombs. We will conclude that roman graves excavated in caves is the most common system to bury in that period. We will also deal with the caves as civil settlements, as well as with their increasing number due to the invasions; as well as the specialization of this system made by Christian monks. This phenomenon has continued through the years and its continuity has been shown nowadays.
