Description
Abstract
dominante.
ABSTRACT: The article focuses on contemporary material and symbolic processes that transform urban functions and attributes into tourist attractions, and cities into tourist destinations. Taking this under consideration the paper concentrates on recent processes that take place in two cities in Argentina: Buenos Aires and Salta. Although they are different from each other, these cities have oriented actions to capture tourists’ attention promoting their heritage and cultural attributes. The paper specifically pays attention to how these cities have become tourist destinations, which attributes were defined as tourist attractions and what social and spatial transformations were involved. Positive effects (that legitimize these renewal initiatives based on heritage and culture) are also analyzed in contrast to those hidden effects that highlight the contradictions of these processes.
