Résumé: La colonisation, les indépendances et, plus tard, l’émigration ont profondément transformé la société traditionnelle d’Afrique occidentale et,
bien entendu, la fonction des griots. Si auparavant ils accompagnaient les rois et les princes en exerçant des occupations variées, telles que généalogistes, chroniqueurs, conseillers, messagers, historiens et instructeurs, de nos jours leurs activités ont changé. Bien que leurs récitations d’épopées, mythes, et autres genres littéraires continuent à amuser et à enseigner à différentes générations d’africains, un grand
nombre d’entre eux ont choisi d’autres voies pour assurer leurs revenus. Les études des chercheurs et les interviews que nous avons réalisées à des griots nous ont permis de constater que la chanson, la musique influencée par les nouveaux goûts occidentaux, et les louanges
sont les principales sources de revenus de ces artistes.
Abstract: Colonization, the gaining of independence and, later, emigration, have deeply transformed traditional Western African society and, with it, the role of griots. When in the old days they accompanied the monarchs and princes as genealogists, chroniclers, advisers, heralds, historians and teachers, nowadays their roles have changed. Although narrative sessions in which epic, myths and other literary genres still entertain and teach different generations of Africans, many griots have chosen other paths, some in order to survive and, the lucky ones, to gain profit from it. Researchers’ studies and interviews with some griots have proved that songs, music influenced by the new technologies of the west, and eulogy have made it possible for them to gain profits.
