Description
Abstract
ABSTRACT: Easter Island is Chile’s most isolated territory, which – thanks to its famous archaeological patrimony – has turned into one of the most important tourist destinations of the country. The purpose of the paper is to analyse the environmental impact of tourism development in Easter Island. Currently, the island faces serious problems regarding waste disposal, sewage system, water and air quality, and biodiversity. In order to conduct our research, two field works were conducted in 2012, during which questionnaires and interviews were undertaken. We conclude that the sustainable development of Easter Island depends on the ability of the Chilean government and the local Rapa Nui community to cope with the current environmental challenges and thus, maintain the island’s attractiveness as a tourist destination. We argue that it is urgent to take necessary steps in order to avoid not only an environmental collapse, but also an economic and social catastrophe.
