Description
Abstract

n those interactions in which a conflict arises between the participants certain strategies of convergent and divergent accommodation are 2 employed. These strategies enable speakers to mitigate or intensify the disagreement between their opposed positions. In this article two accommodation discursive strategies used by Galician - Spanish bilingual speakers in family disputes are analysed: (i) code negotiation and selection, i.e. how participants progressively adjust their conversational style throu gh code selection in order to get closer or further from their interlocutor(s); (ii) the presence or absence of dialectal traces – particularly “gheada” ( debuccalization of the phoneme /g/ resulting in either a voiceless pharyngeal fricative [ ħ] ) and “seseo” (pronuntiation of the phoneme / θ / as [s] – in their discourse as an strategy to express their agreement or disagreement with other speakers. Furthermore, evidence has been found that these accommodation strategies are likewise useful for bui lding speakers’ conversational identities
