Description
Abstract
Abstract: The dispersal ability: important factor of species richness and composition of woody plants in fragmented vegetation of the countryside of Seville (SW of Spain) A hundred vegetation fragments were studied in the countryside of Seville in relation to the vegetation of the nearest Sierra in order to identify factors that influence species richness and distribution of woody plants in fragmented communities. The results showed that species richness increases with the area and decreases with isolation. The fragments presented a nested pattern that was mainly correlated with the area showing that relaxation processes are the cause of impoverishment. The dispersal ability of the plants was important for the species richness and composition of the fragments being the non-ornithochorous species the most vulnerable to fragmentation processes. These fragments tend toward woody encroachment dominated by ornithochorous species.
