Description
Abstract
Mentally handicapped individuals have to meet their sexual needs just as normal individuals do. This statement is interpreted in different ways, since sometimes they are considered infantile and lacking sexuality, whereas some other times they are said to show an excessive sexual impulse. In any case, several authors support the idea that mentally handicapped individuals have a similar sexual development to non-handicapped individuals. The main difference would lie in the difficult interpretation and control of the mentally handicapped's responses to sexual stimuli. There are also differences amont them. Their sexual devlopment varies according to factors such as age, gender, degree of handicap, personality, and, above all, social prejudices. For them to enjoy a normal sexuality, it is advisable to avoid overprotective attitudes and to offer them experiences and broad sexual education.
