Abstract
Este artículo tiene como objetivo analizar las prácticas de representación y distinción llevadas a cabo con ocasión del fallecimiento en 1725 de Juan Manuel Fernández Pacheco, VIII marqués de Villena, fundador y director de la Real Academia Española. Para ello examinamos los diversos dispositivos funerarios organizados tanto por la casa como por la academia, estudiando la pluralidad de elementos simbólicos y materiales que confluyeron en la construcción y exaltación de su memoria. Tales evocaciones evidenciaron una primera y original lectura a partir de una serie de recursos que sirvieron para ensalzar su papel al frente del linaje Pacheco, su experiencia en el campo de batalla y su buen hacer como protector y mecenas de las letras, características que ayudaron a configurar una memoria distinguida que se elevó como prototípica de la nobleza posible en tiempos de Felipe V.
This article aims to analyze the practices of representation and distinction deployed on the death de Juan Manuel Fernández Pacheco, VIII marqués de Villena, in 1725. To do this, we examine the various funerary devices organized by both the Villena house and the Royal Spanish Academy. We studying the plurality of symbolic and material elements that converged in the construction and exaltation of the distinguished memory. These evocations express a first and original biographical reading of the Marquis through the memory of his role as a man of the lineage, his experience on the battlefield and his good work as protector and patron of the letters, characteristics that helped to configure a distinguished memory as prototypical of the nobility in the time of Felipe V.
