Description
Abstract
Abstract: This study examines Froya’s usurpation in Tarraconensis (653), an episode largely neglected by historiography and usually overshadowed by the Eighth Council of Toledo. Drawing on sources such as Taio of Zaragoza and the conciliar acts, it advances the hypothesis that this was not merely a regional revolt, but rather an invasion launched from Merovingian Gaul by exiled Goths (refugae) and supported by Basque mercenaries. It also proposes a revision of the traditional chronology, since the available evidence suggests that the conflict may have begun while Chindaswinth was still alive and lasted for several months, culminating in the siege of Zaragoza. Froya’s defeat, although it legitimized Recceswinth, also exposed his fragility and led him to adopt a conciliatory policy toward the nobility and the clergy. The subsequent Eighth Council of Toledo may be interpreted as a reordering of the political balance, one that curbed royal authoritarianism and redefined the distribution of power in the Visigothic kingdom, thereby shaping both political theology and the balance between monarchy, aristocracy, and Church in mid-seventh-century Spania.
