- PublicationOpen AccessCaring for carers? The effect of public subsidies on the well-being of unpaid carers(The University of Chicago Press, 2023-10-23) Costa-Font, Joan; D´Amico, Francesco; Vilaplana Prieto, Cristina; Fundamentos del Análisis EconómicoWe study the effect of long-term care subsidies and supports on the well-being of unpaid caregivers. We draw on evidence from a policy intervention, which universalized previously means-tested caregiving supports in Scotland, known as free personal care (FPC). We document causal evidence of an increase in the well-being (happiness) of unpaid carers after the introduction of FPC. Our estimates suggest economically relevant improvements in happiness (12 percentage point increase in subjective well-being) among caregivers exposed to FPC and who provide at least 35 hours of care per week. Consistently, these results are larger among women and non-actively employed caregivers (17 percentage point increase in happiness). Estimates are not driven by selection into caregiving; they are explained by income effects of FPC among caregivers.
- PublicationOpen AccessEffectiveness of a positive psychology intervention combinedwith cognitive behavioral therapy in university students(Universidad de Murcia. Servicio de Publicaciones, 2016) Marrero, Rosario-Josefa; Carballeira, Mónica; Martín, Sabrina; Mejías, Miriam; Hernández, Juan-AndrésThe aim of this study was to design and implement a positive intervention combined with cognitive-behavioral therapy to enhance subjective and psychological well-being and other positive functioning constructs in a convenience sample. Participants analysed were 48 university students(mean age 22.25),25 assigned nonrandomized to intervention condition and 23 to no-treatment waiting-list control condition. All participants were assessed pre- and post-intervention to test the treatment program effectiveness. Repeated-measures ANCOVAs, controlling baseline differences between the two groups, indicated that the intervention group reported greater social support after the intervention period than the waiting-listcontrol group.Within-group differences were found for happiness, self-acceptance, positive relations with others, optimism, and self-esteem in the intervention group; these differences did not appear in the waiting-list con-trol group. These findings suggest the limited capacity of this intervention program for improving well-being through positive activities combined with cognitive-behavioral therapy. Future research should analyse what kind of activities could be more effective in promoting well-beingdepend-ing on the characteristics of participants
- PublicationOpen AccessEveryday life infrastructure impact on subjective well-being in the European Union: a gender perspective(MDPI, 2024-09-16) Ayala Gaytán, Edgardo Arturo; Mayor Balsas, José Manuel; Quintanilla Domíguez, Claudia María; Alarcón García, GloriaThis paper processes the 2015 Benefits of Gender Equality through Infrastructure Provision (BGEIP) Survey, a representative survey for the EU-28, to estimating the impact of everyday life infrastructure access on subjective well-being (SWB) from a gender perspective in Europe. Our estimations prove that accessing everyday life infrastructure in Europe indeed increases SWB, but it contributes to increasing more the SWB of women than that of men. Women’s well-being is positively affected for all kinds of everyday life infrastructures, but the differences with respect to men are larger for the Nursery category for children up to 3 years and for the Centers category for people with long term disabilities. In contrast, men’s well-being is only sensitive to the Health infrastructure and to the Gym and Workout places. Clearly, targeting infrastructure investment helping women in caring children, and other dependents in the family constitute an excellent vehicle for increasing women’s SWB and reducing gender inequality in Europe.
- PublicationRestrictedOn the simultaneous relationship between the SF-6D index and satisfaction with life(Springer, 2013-12) Garrido, Silvia; Méndez Martínez, Ildefonso; Abellán, José María; Economía AplicadaThis paper aims to examine whether life satisfaction and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) are simultaneously related, as well as to quantify the bias that occurs if simultaneity is not accounted for. The study sample consisted of 870 respondents, representative of the Spanish adult general population. Using a simultaneous equations system —with the satisfaction with life scale (SWLS) and the SF-6D index as outcome variables—, we found a simultaneous association between life satisfaction and HRQoL, although this relationship is heterogeneous in individual characteristics such as age and sex. More important, the fact of estimating the relationship between life satisfaction and HRQoL under a unidirectional approach severely underestimates the effect of life satisfaction on HRQoL and, to a lesser degree, the reverse direction effect. In consequence, policy decisions intended to improve satisfaction with life or HRQoL can be wrong if they rely on unidirectional estimates. Another relevant implication of this research is that, as a result of the simultaneous relationship between life satisfaction and HRQoL, not only health interventions may increase satisfaction with life, but also policies that improve life satisfaction can lead to positive side effects on HRQoL.
- PublicationOpen AccessPsychometric properties of the Satisfaction with Life Scale in Brazilian Para athletes(Universidad de Murcia.
- PublicationOpen AccessRunning involvement, loyalty to running, and subjective well-being: A cluster analysis(Universidad de Murcia. Servicio de publicaciones, 2022) Silva, Alfredo; Sobreiro, PedroOne of the main policy objectives of many Sports and Health Government Departments is to increase sports participation to promote citizens health and well-being. The present study uses cluster analysis with the aim of identifying segments of runners based upon running involvement, loyalty to running and subjective well-being. A sample of 736 runners from one of Portugal's most popular athletics races completed a questionnaire. The number of clusters was determined using the BIC. Four significant clusters were identified. The main result showed that the cluster with the highest level of subjective well-being was not the group of runners with the highest level of loyalty to the race. The results show the need to design strategies focused on the clusters identified to promote sports participation through running, aiming to increase running involvement and subjective well-being
- PublicationOpen AccessSatisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) adapted to work: Psychometric Properties of the Satisfaction with Work Scale (SWWS)(Universidad de Murcia.
