Disentangling the effect of ICT adoption on SMEs performance: The mediating roles of Corporate Social Responsibility and Innovation
(Institute of Economic Research (Poland), 2022) Santos Jaén, José Manuel; Palacios Manzano, Mercedes; León Gómez, Ana; Ruiz Palomo, Daniel; Economía Financiera y Contabilidad
Research background: The literature on the effects of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) on performance is extensive and shows a significant positive effect. Likewise, the use of ICT to facilitate and report on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) practices implement-ed by Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) contributes to improve business performance. Moreover, through innovative activities, firms also obtain competitive advantages that impact positively on their performance, even more so when they are impacted by CSR. For this reason, it is expected that the adoption of ICTs in companies through a CSR-oriented strategy will increase their impact on business performance. Purpose of the article: This article tries to examine how ICT affects SMEs’ performance through CSR and innovation. Methods: We tested our hypotheses using a sample of 2,825 Spanish SMEs and by applying a Partial Least Squares Path Modeling (PLS-PM) with a double confirmatory and predictive purpose: to identify the causal relationships between latent variables, and to evaluate the ability of the model to make predictions for individual cases. Findings & value added: The results show that CSR-oriented ICT impacts innovation by changing strategies and business model in companies. Moreover, the implementation of CSR practices gave them competitive advantages to increase their performance. We highlight how innovation gives companies greater capacity to respond to changes in their environment and how innovation positively impacts the link between CSR and performance. Finally, our research makes two significant contributions to the literature by incorporating two sequential mediating effects into the model. On the one hand, the indirect effect of ICT on innovation through CSR. On the other hand, the indirect effect of CSR on SME performance through innovation.

Female directors and firm performance in Italian and Spanish listed firms Does masculinity matter?
(2019) Martín Ugedo, Juan Francisco; Mínguez Vera, Antonio; Rossi, Fabrizio; Organización de Empresas y Finanzas; Facultades, Departamentos, Servicios y Escuelas::Departamentos de la UMU::Organización de Empresas y Finanzas
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between women on the board of directors and firm performance in a comparative analysis between Italy and Spain. Design/methodology/approach – The generalized method of moment is employed to examine this relationship in a sample of 1,393 firm-year observations. Findings – The results show that the presence of women on the board has a positive impact on the performance of Italian and Spanish firms. However, when the whole sample is divided into Italy and Spain, some results are remarkable. For Spain, the presence of women on the board has a positive influence on firm performance, whereas for Italy the authors find a negative and significant effect on firm performance. This study also finds that the “masculinity” dimension has a negative impact on firm performance. Practical implications – The results of this study have several practical implications. First, masculinity differences within the countries can have a large impact on firm performance and can explain some differences between similar countries. Second, the legal system of countries might not explain adequately some differences in the decision-making process. Third, cultural values and thinking styles, in terms of masculinity, might better explain why the results on the relationship between female directors and firm performance are mixed. Fourth, the findings suggest that it is very important to promote gender equality, not only by passing laws but also taking action about the educational system. Originality/value – To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study that investigates the relationship between female directors and firm performance between Italy and Spain considering the cultural differences in term of “masculinity.”

Formalized HR practices and firm performance: An empirical comparison of family and non-family firms
(2019) Sánchez Marín, Gregorio; Meroño Cerdán, Ángel L.; Carrasco Hernández, Antonio J.; Organización de Empresas y Finanzas; Facultades, Departamentos, Servicios y Escuelas::Departamentos de la UMU::Organización de Empresas y Finanzas
The influence of the family on human resource (HR) management structures creates important idiosyncrasies with potential implications in terms of firm performance. Based on the agency and socioemotional wealth (SEW) perspectives, this paper examines the formalization and effectiveness of three basic HR practices – selection, training, and compensation – in different contexts of family and non-family firms. Using a sample of 500 Spanish companies, the results show that a higher degree of HR formalization has a positive influence on firm performance, confirming the negative moderating influence of family involvement on the relationship between the formalization of training practices and the firm performance. In addition, the findings indicate that the mediating role of selection practices in the relationship between training and firm performance is smaller in family than in non-family firms

Impact of Environmental Disclosure on Firm Performance : the Mediating Role of Green Innovation
(Universidad de Murcia, Servicio de Publicaciones, 2023) Malik, Fizzah; Wang, Fangjun; Li, Jiyuan; Naseem, Muhammad Akram
This study focuses on the impact of environmental disclosure on financial performance. Moreover, the current study aims to explore the mediating impact of green innovation and provide novel evidence regarding this relationship using stakeholder and signalling theory. This study used a sample dataset comprising Chinese firms listed on Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchange for the period of 2005–2016. In our measurement model, green innovation is the partial mediator between the positive relationship of environmental disclosure and firm performance. Empirical results show that environmental disclosure affects firm financial performance directly and positively influences it through green innovation in Chinese firms. The study suggests that Chinese firms have implications for improved performance by increasing environmental disclosure and green practices.

Social Networks and Dynamic Firm Performance: Evidence from the Taiwanese Semiconductor Industry
(Universidad de Murcia, Servicio de Publicaciones, 2021) Wang, Wei-Kang; Lu, Wen-Min; Ting, Irene Wei Kiong; Chen, Yu-Hsuan
This study examines the relationship between board interlock and firm performance. Using the Taiwanese semiconductor industrys dataset from 2013 to 2015, this study uses centrality, structure holes, and the number of interlocking boards as proxies of board interlock. This study also evaluates firm performance over a long-term period through a dynamic data envelopment analysis model. which concluded that board interlock improves dynamic efficiency. Using a directors social network analysis, we also identified the top five companies with the best board interlock in terms of centrality, structural holes, and the number of interlocking directors. Overall, this paper is novel in linking board interlock to dynamic efficiency. The study enriches the extant accounting literature regarding the role of directors in influencing firm performance and evaluate firm performance from a multidimensional efficiency perspective

The relationship between marketing control mechanisms and firm performance
(Universitat Hamburg, 2019-05) Munuera-Alemán, Jose-Luis; Montoya, Luz Alexandra; Ortiz-Rendón, Paola Andrea; Comercialización e Investigación de Mercados
Marketing professionals and academics face the challenge of showing how marketing costs affect shareholder value. According to literature, marketing control mechanisms affect organizational results, making them a component of marketing performance. However, there is little or no empirical evidence to support that claim, which is why the aim of this study is to examine the relationship between marketing control mechanisms and the marketing process. In particular, the paper focuses on the relationship between the strategic decision-making process with financial and organizational results. The paper based on 201 cross-sectional surveys involving managers of Colombian companies, using PLS-SEM in order to verify the proposed hypotheses. The results show that there is a relationship between marketing control mechanisms and strategic decisions, and that it has a significant impact on organizational results.
