- PublicationOpen AccessChronicle of a forecast flood: exposure and vulnerability on the south‑east coast of Spain(Springer, 2022-06-09) Giménez García, Rubén; Ruiz Álvarez, Víctor; García Marín, Ramón; GeografíaIn recent years, floods have become one of the natural hazards that generate the greatest economic and human losses on the planet. As is well known, torrential rainfall events are the triggering factor for flooding processes; nevertheless, it is worth examining the responsibility of the human factor, such as urban development, in the occurrence of these potential natural disasters. To this end, rainfall observations obtained during different precipitation events have been analysed. The evolution and urban development from the growth of the number of buildings was also examined. The information obtained has been crossed with the digital cartography of flooded areas (National System of Flood Zones Cartography, SNCZI in Spanish acronym). The results obtained show that the last two extraordinary rainfall events (December 2016 and September 2019) that occurred in the municipalities of Los Alcázares and San Javier (Region of Murcia, SE Spain) exceeded 200 mm, and quantified very high hourly intensities (> 50 mm/h). On the other hand, the number of buildings constructed and the built-up area in both municipalities has increased notably, with an evolution between 1950 and 2019 from 1057 to 15,969 buildings constructed, increasing from 16.09 ha. to 450.06 ha. occupied. This real estate development has caused the number of buildings exposed to flooding to reach 3840 in 2019 for a 10-year RP (return period) and 5941 for a 500-year RP. It can be concluded by indicating the clear influence of territorial transformation on the increase of exposure and economic losses generated by flood events
- PublicationOpen AccessCommunity, exposed singularity and death in Mrs Dalloway.(Universidad de Murcia, Servicio de Publicaciones., 2024) López Sánchez-Vizcaíno, María JesúsThis essay brings Virginia Woolf and Jean-Luc Nancy into dialogue, focusing on their similar critique of essentialized models of community and evocation of forms of being-with that derive from the experiences of singularity and death. It identifies two forms of community in Woolf’s novel Mrs Dalloway (1925). The first one corresponds to Nancy’s conception of the immanent community, built upon essence and fusion, and in which death is provided with an ideological meaning. In Woolf’s novel, this communitarian logic traverses the official, ritualistic way in which England has sublimated the death and loss caused by the First World War, and the repressive conventions and the authoritarian spirit of the governing classes. An alternative kind of community, however, is suggested in Mrs Dalloway, one that can be identified with Nancy’s conception of the inoperative community: a community of singular beings who share their finitude, exposure and death. Blanchot’s ideas on the transient community of lovers and Butler’s theorization of a ‘we’ based upon common vulnerability and loss also shed light on this novel’s concern with antisocial bonds between characters that escape traditional forms of affiliation.
- PublicationOpen AccessReliable and sensitive analytical platform to assess dietary exposure of pigs to mycotoxins and explore potential urinary biomarkers(Elsevier, 2024-12-24) Castell Martínez, Ana; Arroyo Manzanares, Natalia; Campillo Seva, Natalia; Sanz Fernández, Santos; Rodríguez Estévez, Vicente; Roquet, Josep; González, Antonio; Fenoll, José; Viñas López-Pelegrin, Pilar; Química AnalíticaA reliable and sensitive analytical platform is proposed for the assessment of pig exposure to mycotoxins through the consumption of commercial feed. A total of 48 naturally contaminated feed and 55 urine samples collected from eight Spanish farms were analyzed using a fast and simple methodology based on solid-liquid extraction (SLE) or liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) and dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME). High-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) was used for the targeted analysis of 27 mycotoxins from different families in both matrices achieving limits of quantification in a range of 0.019–73.5 ng/g in feed and 0.011–31.7 ng/mL in urine. All feed samples showed contamination with at least 7 mycotoxins. Enniatins (A, A1, B and B1) and beauvericin were quantified in 100 % of feed samples. ENNB, tenuazonic acid (TeA) and deoxynivalenol (DON) were the mycotoxins with the highest mean total concentrations (1.0 ± 1.9 μg/g, 155 ± 209 ng/g and 81 ± 94 ng/g, respectively). In urine samples, DON, TeA, ENNB1 and ENNA were the most prevalent mycotoxins; and TeA, fumonisin B1 and alternariol had the highest mean total concentration (133 ± 199 ng/mg, 0.43 ± 1.3 μg/mg and 0.29 ± 1.3 μg/mg creatinine, respectively). Statistical tests revealed the correlation of DON and TeA occurrence in feed and urine. Untargeted analysis byHPLC coupled to quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometer (Q-TOF-MS) yielded some urinary biomarkers of mycotoxin exposure and other relevant compounds such as certain antibiotic residues in urine.
