- PublicationOpen AccessInviting foreign direct investment for sports development projects in relation to economic development and development challenges(Universidad de Murcia. Servicio de publicaciones, 2024) Mostafa Mohamed, Samir Abdel Latif; Khalil Sayyd, Sameer Mohammed; Mohamed Ghreeb, Mohamed SolimanThe present study aimed to investigate attracting foreign direct investment for sports development projects in relation to economic developments and challenges. The researchers utilized a descriptive approach, using a questionnaire, due to its appropriateness for the nature of the research. A total of 300 workers from the General Office of the Ministry of Youth and Sports participated in this study. They were selected using a stratified purposeful sampling method from the following categories: undersecretaries, general directors, department directors, department heads, and administrators. The findings of this study showed support for foreign tradeexchanges through investment in export industries, especially in contexts where the host country has an advantage over the country of origin and where banking facilities are available in commercial banks. Additionally, it was demonstrated that lower risk and higher returns lead to an influx of investments. Consequently, this increases capital formation, particularly by reducing the state's dependence on external debt and decreasing the volume of foreign aid
- PublicationOpen AccessMind the Gap in Financial Inclusion! Microcredit Institutions fieldwork in Peru(Universidad de Murcia, Servicio de Publicaciones, 2023) López-Sánchez, Pilar; Urquía-Grande, ElenaFinancial inclusion remains a key political issue. Since microcredit first captured public attention, Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) have expanded rapidly all around the world. Although much economic and financial literature has highlighted the importance of microfinance as a factor of development, there is also an intense debate about its effectiveness as a development tool. This paper is a descriptive analysis of the microcredit state of the art contrasted with the fieldwork done in Peru. A qualitative research methodology was used; 29 in-depth face-to-face interviews were done with different microfinance agents: MFIs, NPOs, microfinance associations, and microfinance customers in Peru. Peru has been chosen because it has a dynamic and well-regulated microfinance sector with more than 70 entities specialized in microfinance. Though statistical generalization is not possible, interview data provided rich and contextual evidence, which is often missing from a quantitative research approach. This paper highlights the importance of financial and accounting education in microcredit beneficiaries and how can it be enhanced in the digital age. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced vulnerable population to embrace new digital technologies and has highlighted the digital gap that still exists in Latin America although this situation presents opportunities and challenges. This present study contributes to the debate over how to improve microcredit intervention´s impact on the more vulnerable and identifies some unique insights into the interrelationships of financial education and financial inclusion. The results of the present study confirm that financial and accounting education are key elements in financial inclusion.
- PublicationOpen AccessNet operating working capital and firm value: a cross-country analysis(SAGE Publications, 2020-07-28) Baños Caballero, Sonia; García Teruel, Pedro Juan; Martínez-Solano, Pedro; Organización de Empresas y Finanzas; Facultades, Departamentos, Servicios y Escuelas::Departamentos de la UMU::Economía Financiera y ContabilidadHere we use a sample of firms from 30 countries during the period 1995-2013 to examine the relationship between net operating working capital (NWC) and firm value. Specifically, we show that the value of NWC varies across countries and that it depends on both investor protection and a country’s financial and economic development. Our findings imply that shareholders value NWC more in countries with strong enforcement of investor rights, and greater financial and economic development.
- PublicationOpen AccessThe Relationship between Height and Economic Development in Spain. An Historical Perspective(2010-01-11T13:07:43Z) María-Dolores Pedrero, Ramón; Martínez Carrión, José Miguel; Fundamentos del Análisis Económico; Economía AplicadaThis paper investigates the relationship between height and economic development in the modern Spain. The relation is investigated using recently constructed times series with recruitment data of conscripts. We observed changes in average height along the analyzed period. These variations could be explained by different indicators of economic development such as for consumption of hygiene products, for deflator of private consumption, schooling rate, infant mortality and trade. We model human stature as a Vector Autoregressive Model (VAR) and we proceed to estimate a Vector Autoregressive Equilibrium Correction Model (VECqM) to quantify the height response to different changes in the different explanatory variables. The analysis shows that there is a long-run relationship between height, income, and other indicators of economic development in Spain as consumption of hygiene products, and the degree of openness.
