Abstract
El conocimiento de los agricultores tradicionales es enciclopédico y cambiante, pues siguen
aprendiendo de las experiencias y el intercambio mutuo en la actualización de la agroecología.
La ciencia moderna de la ecología es (o debería ser) la base científica de la agroecología y debería
informar sinérgicamente la continua acumulación de conocimientos inherentes a la práctica de
los pequeños agricultores. El conocimiento agrícola tradicional es profundo pero limitado, mientras
que el conocimiento ecológico moderno es amplio pero poco profundo. La intersección de
los conocimientos tradicionales con la ecología moderna podría resultar en la generación de un
conocimiento que es a la vez profundo y amplio.
ABSTRACT: The knowledge of traditional farmers is encyclopedic and ever changing as they continue learning from experiments and mutual interchange in the actualization of agroecology. The modern science of ecology is (or should be) the scientific basis of agroecology and should synergistically inform the ongoing accumulation of knowledge inherent in the practice of small-scale farmers. Traditional agricultural knowledge is deep but narrow, while modern ecological knowledge is broad but shallow. The intersection of traditional knowledge with modern ecology could result in the generation of knowledge that is simultaneously deep and broad.
