Description
Abstract
Abstract: Natural disasters have plagued humankind for as long as we have existed. Most studies have focused on their devastating effects. However, they sometimes provided an opportunity to rethink urban planning and apply novel typologies. This article offers an analysis of two seismic sequences, in Italy and Chile, in which the destruction allowed reflection on the most appropriate ways to correct the mistakes of the past. Italy and Chile, two territories with very different realities, but which share the peculiarity of having implemented modern models of urban planning. For the Italian case, the Calabrian earthquake of 1783 and the influence of Enlightenment thinking on the refoundation of towns have been investigated, while for the Chilean case, the example of the city of Chillán in 1939 has been studied, the protagonist of the discussion on the parameters of modern architecture in Chile.
