¿Es la plasticidad cerebral un factor crítico en el tratamiento de las alteraciones cognitivas asociadas al envejecimiento?

dc.description.abstractEn este artículo se presenta un acercamiento crítico a una de las cuestiones de especial interés en el ámbito de las neurociencias. Investigaciones recientes intentan determinar si la modificación y potenciación de la plasticidad cerebral puede suponer un beneficio terapéutico en el tratamiento de los déficits cognitivos asociados al envejecimiento normal y a enfermedades neurodegenerativas como la Enfermedad de Alzheimer. La pregunta a la que se intenta responder en este trabajo es si dicho deterioro cognitivo podría mejorarse o incluso prevenirse con estrategias basadas en la capacidad del Sistema Nervioso para la plasticidad, capacidad que parece mantenerse incluso en edades avanzadas. Nuestro objetivo en este artículo es mostrar la evidencia científica que nos lleva a sugerir que la respuesta a la pregunta planteada como título al mismo podría ser afirmativa en el sentido de que la plasticidad cerebral en respuesta a diversos factores (estado de salud, nutrición, actividad física, entrenamiento cognitivo...) parece ser un elemento crítico en el logro de una vejez más saludable.es
dc.description.abstractIn this paper we present a critical approach to one of the subjects of special interest in the ambit of neurosciences. Recent investigations have attempted to establish whether the modification and potentiation of brain plasticity could be of therapeutic benefit in the treatment of cognitive deficits related to normal aging and to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer ́s disease. The question we try to answer is whether the cognitive decline could be ameliorated or even prevented with strategies based on the ability of the Central Nervous System for plasticity, an ability that is believed to be main-tained until an advanced age. Our aim is to review the scientific evidence that seems to suggest that the answer to the question posed in the title of this paper could be affirmative in the sense that brain plasticity in response to several factors (health status, nutrition, physical activity, cognitive training...) would be a critical element in the achievement of a more healthy aging.
