Description
Abstract
In almost half of Plautus’ comedies some of the characters, usually with the complicity of others, pretend to be another person with the aim of deceiving a third. It is what we call impostures of identity, since the characters falsify their real identity and acquire another one which characterizes them while the deception is carried out. The vocative, as a linguistic unit that makes explicit the identity of the speakers, is affected by this change and acquires values that it would not have in another context. The goal of this article is, therefore, to analyse what vocatives are used and which speakers use them in order to assume the functionality which the plot of the deception requires.
