This article analyzes the possible reasons why Cervantes postponed the publishing of the Second Part of Don Quixote ; , the circumstances in which Alonso Fernández de Avellaneda’s Quixote was conceived and published (both print runs in Ta - rragona, 1614); the critics and readers’ reactions to this work; its influence on 1615 Don Quixote, and the reasons why Avellaneda may have chan - ged his admiring attitude towards Cervantes in the novel for the insulting tone of the prologue
