Abstract
Resumen: Cuando se recorre la mayor parte de los trabajos críticos publicados acerca de Vathek de William Beckford, escritor de nacionalidad inglesa –que, no obstante, decidió publicar este cuento en lengua francesa- , quedamos sorprendidos, en tanto que lectores contemporáneos,
de encontrar allí mucho más que un relato fantástico. Nos vemos tentados de releer la historia literaria del cuento de finales del siglo XVIII
que prepara su entrada en el romanticismo más oscuro del siglo XIX. ¿Podemos seguir manteniendo la recepción de este cuento en el eclecticismo de un género que engloba lo maravilloso, lo fantástico, lo alegórico y lo filosófico? Sin rechazar estas clasificaciones genéricas, me parece apropiado interrogar de otra manera esta obra traducida al español por Guillermo Carnero. ¿Cuál es, en consecuencia, el procedimiento

Abstract: When one reads a large of part of the critics that have been published so far about Vathek by William Beckford, the English writer- who nevertheless chose to present this short story in the French language- the contemporary reader cannot help but wonder that what he reads is something more than a fantastic narration. We are therefore tempted to read anew the literary history of the short story at the end of the 18th century which paved the way for the dark Romanticism of the 19th century. Is it possible to include this short story within a genre that includes the marvellous, the fantastic, the allegorical, the philosophical? Without refuting the genre classifications, I think it appropriate to question this work, translated by the Spanish poet Guillermo Carnero, in a different way. So, what is the creative process at work in Vathek by William Bedford?
