Abstract
La noción aristotélica de «σεμνότης»
ha sido traducida generalmente por «dignidad», y
los estados que flanquean a este modo de ser por
los extremos, la «αὐθάδεια» y la «ἀρέσκεια»,
como «arrogancia» y «servilismo». En este artí-
culo aporto argumentos para sostener que, en rea-
lidad, el fragmento de la «σεμνότης» de la Ética
Eudemia mostraba una teoría del «decoro», cuyo
defecto era la «grosería», y su exceso, la «obse-
quiosidad». El decoro de Aristóteles no equivalía
al «decorum» de Cicerón, pero sí a la expresión
«guardar el decoro» que cristalizó en el Siglo de
Oro español.
The aristotelian notion of «σεμνότης» has been generally translated as «dignity», and the two dispositions that flaks this intermediate way, «αὐθάδεια» and «ἀρέσκεια», as «arro- gance» and «servility». In this paper I will argue that the Eudemian Ethics passage about the «σεμνότης» was, in fact, a «decorum» theory, in which defiency is «rudeness» and excess «obse- quiousness». Aristotle’s decorum was not the same as Cicero’s decorum, but it was the same as the expression «guardar el decoro», which crysta- llised in the Spanish Golden Age.
