Abstract
Este artículo pretende avanzar en el estudio de la pesca marítima en un momento clave de su desarrollo, la denominada por Paz-Andrade “tercera etapa de expansión” de las pesquerías españolas, cuando comenzaron a explotarse los caladeros atlánticos del hemisferio sur, bajo la tecnología de la congelación. Se trata de analizar la evolución de las principales magnitudes (flota, desembarcos, precios, etc.), las bases en que se asentó esta expansión, el papel jugado por el estado y sus protagonistas: las empresas. El trabajo finaliza a comienzos de los años setenta, cuando quebró el marco de aguas libres que había caracterizado la actividad pesquera española, por la redefinición de los derechos de pesca a escala internacional, con la rápida extensión de las doscientas millas, y cuando diversos problemas, como el aumento de los costes de producción o el descenso de los rendimientos, pusieron en cuestión las bases de su desarrollo.
This article studies Spanish maritime fishing in a key period, named third phase of expansion by Paz Andrade, when Spain started to exploit Atlantic fishing grounds in the South hemisphere under new freezing technologies. This paper analyzes the evolution of main data (fishing fleet, unloading, and prices), the origins of fishing expansion, the role played by different social agents: state and fishing firms. This research finishes in the early seventies when international fishing law fixed the extension of two hundred miles and other problems such as the increase of production cost and the benefits decline limited the Spanish fishing growth.
