Description
Abstract
(Adorno, Horkheimer).
Abstract: This paper addresses two different notions of the past in Walter Benjamin’s late work. One of them determines the past as «unfinished» or «truncated», the other conceives it as «original» or «primitive». I analyze both notions and propose to understand them as complementary. I maintain that Benjamin’s conception of the past determines his idea of redemption as a demand of the objective world, in contrast to the function of redemption as a criterion to examine the current situation, findable in the work of other thinkers of Western Marxism (Adorno, Horkheimer).
