La actividad pesquera en la bahía de Mazarrón y el turismo marinero como propuesta de desarrollo

Abstract

Esta investigación se centra en el análisis de la actividad pesquera en la Bahía de Mazarrón, en su influencia en el municipio que le da nombre, y en las repercusiones que dicha actividad tiene en el contexto regional. Además, se estudian los recursos pesqueros, materiales e inmateriales, con los que cuenta Mazarrón para la puesta en valor de una nueva e incipiente actividad turística, el denominado turismo marinero, que sirva para complementar el modelo turístico actual basado en el turismo de sol y playa y que permita ofertar actividades turísticas a lo largo de todo el año, pues la actividad turística en Mazarrón se realiza prácticamente durante los meses estivales. El marco teórico-conceptual que guía la investigación se estructura en los siguientes puntos de reflexión: i) La sostenibilidad como preocupación central, en relación con los principios del nuevo paradigma de desarrollo turístico sostenible y con la realización de las actividades económicas de un modo racional y sostenible que garantice la preservación de los recursos; ii) La pesca como patrimonio cultural y como recurso turístico, pues el sector pesquero cuenta con un patrimonio material e inmaterial que reviste un gran interés para el público en general; iii) El devenir del sector pesquero, que hasta hace muy pocos años era un gran pilar en la economía de Mazarrón y que cada vez cuenta con un menor peso en el sector económico, a pesar de tener una gran importancia dentro del contexto regional pesquero; iv) Las tradiciones y modo de vida de los pescadores, ya que muchas de las tradiciones se están perdiendo, y el modo de vida de las familias que se dedican a la pesca ha cambiado en las últimas décadas con la incorporación de la mujer al trabajo o jóvenes que no quieren dedicarse al sector pesquero. Para la elaboración de esta tesis doctoral se ha utilizado fuentes cuantitativas, con el fin de cuantificar las diversas variables relacionadas con la pesca y el turismo, y cualitativas, para conocer la realidad del territorio a través de las personas que lo frecuentan y de sus experiencias. Entre las principales conclusiones de esta investigación se encuentran: i) La importancia del sector pesquero en Mazarrón a nivel regional, debido al número de activos y al desembarco de capturas; ii) La pérdida de barcos durante los últimos años debido a la jubilación de los armadores, esto muestra un devenir incierto del sector; y iii) La existencia de numerosos recursos idóneos de ser aprovechados para la puesta en marcha del turismo marinero. The project focuses on the analysis of the fishing activity in the Mazarrón Bay and its influence in the town that gives its name, and the repercussions that this activity has on the regional context. In addition, fishing resources, material and immaterial are studied, with which Mazarrón has for the enhancement of a new and incipient tourism activity Fishing Tourism, with the aim of complementing the current tourist model, based on sun and beach tourism, allowing the offer of new tourist activities throughout the year, since current tourism activity in Mazarrón takes place mainly in the summer months. The theoretical framework that guides the research is divided into the following reflection points: i) Sustainability as a central concern, in relation to the principles of the new paradigm of sustainable tourism development with the realization of economic activities in a rational and sustainable manner which ensures the preservation of resources; ii) Fishing as cultural heritage and as a tourist resort, since the fisheries sector has a tangible and intangible heritage which is of great interest to the public in general; iii) The future of the fishing industry, which until a few years ago was a major pillar in the economy of Mazarrón and increasingly has less weight in the economic sector, despite having great importance in the fisheries regional context; iv) The traditions and way of life of the fishermen, as many of the traditions are being lost, and the way of life of the families engaged in fishing has changed in the last decades with the incorporation of women into the labour or the refusal of young people to enter in fishery sector. For the elaboration of this doctoral thesis, quantitative sources have been used, in order to quantify the various variables related to fishing and tourism, and qualitative, to know the reality of the territory through the people who frequent it and their experiences. Among the main conclusions of this investigation are: i) The importance of the fishing sector in Mazarrón at a regional level, due to the number of assets and the landing of catches; ii) The loss of ships in recent years due to the retirement of shipowners, this shows an uncertain future of the sector; and iii) The existence of numerous suitable resources to be used for the implementation of marine tourism.
