"Oh! Fuir, partir!" Maupassant au Maghreb: reportage ou écriture de soi?

Abstract

In Au Soleil (1884) and La Vie errante (1890), Maupassant tackles Maghreb and its realia. Extracted from journalistic chronicles, these two narratives of journey describe the customs and landscapes of the regions gone through. But these reports -that fall under the category of ethnography- are imbued with poetry and literary references. Between reality and representation, the author sometimes undertakes intimate writing, where his obsessions of illness and madness are looming. You need to go beyond the mere report, read between the lines the uneasiness of the travelling writer and his fear of death, omnipresent in his pages, as he fled France so as to forget his anxiety and suffering.

En Al sol (1884) y La vida errante (1890), Maupassant hace descubrir a los lectores el Magreb y sus realia. Sacados de crónicas periodísticas, sus dos relatos de viaje describen las costumbres y los paisajes de las regiones que atravesó. Sin embargo, esos reportajes que parecen de etnografía también están llenos de poesía y de referencias literarias. Entre realidad y representación, el autor se deja a veces llevar por una escritura íntima, en la cual traslucen sus obsesiones con la enfermedad y la locura. Así pues hay que superar el mero reportaje para leer entre líneas el malestar del escritor viajero y su miedo a la muerte, omnipresente en sus páginas, aunque huyó de Francia para olvidarse de sus angustias y de su dolor.
