Las dinámicas turísticas en espacios rurales de baja densidad demográfica antes y después de la pandemia. Estudio de caso

Abstract

Tourism development in Spain has undergone a significant transformation, adapting to the changing needs of travellers. The COVID-19 pandemic impacted negatively with travel restrictions, paralyzing tourism activity in the years 2020 and 2021. This research focuses on analysing the impact on tourism in rural areas of low population density, as is the case of Extremadura. A study is carried out at the municipal level, using data from the occupancy surveys of the National Institute of Statistics, to check whether the COVID pandemic has been an opportunity to relaunch these places from the tourism sector. New methodologies are used to analyse data on both supply and demand at the municipal level. In this way, we have compared the numbers of places offered and travellers received before and after the pandemic, seeking to understand the variations in tourism activity in the municipalities of Extremadura. Among the results obtained, it can be seen that, in this study area, the tourism sector has recovered the figures achieved prior to the pandemic, and in some areas, it has even improved its tourism potential.

El desarrollo del turismo en España ha experimentado una transformación significativa, adaptándose a las cambiantes necesidades de los viajeros. La pandemia de COVID-19 impactó negativamente con restricciones de viaje, paralizando la actividad turística en los años 2020 y 2021. Esta investigación se centra en analizar el impacto en el turismo en áreas rurales de baja densidad demográfica, como es el caso de Extremadura. Se realiza un estudio a escala municipal, utilizando datos de las encuestas de ocupación del Instituto Nacional de Estadística, para comprobar si la pandemia del COVID ha sido una oportunidad para relanzar estos lugares desde el sector turístico. Se emplea una metodología que permite analizar datos, tanto de oferta como de demanda, a escala municipal. De este modo, se han comparado las cifras de plazas ofertadas y viajeros recibidos con anterioridad a la pandemia y posteriormente a esta, buscando entender las variaciones en la actividad turística de los municipios extremeños. Entre los resultados obtenidos se puede constatar que, en esta área de estudio, el sector turístico, a grandes rasgos, ha recuperado las cifras alcanzadas previamente a la pandemia, e incluso en algunos territorios mejorando su potencial turístico.
