After examining the organization of the lin-guistic expression of certainty in French and Spanish, we found that some French discourse markers that originally expressed certainty have undergone a process of “devaluation” in the dia-chrony of the language, so that they have ended up conveying non-certainty in contemporary French; among them, the adverb certainement.Having reviewed the existing scientific literatu-re on this adverb, we propose our own analysis based on the scrutiny of all the occurrences in the Frantext database. This examination has enabled us to distinguish three uses, justified by objective linguistic properties and with very different frequencies in contemporary French. The diachronic evolution of certainement re-veals that this marker went from initially (12thcentury) expressing verbal manner to later (14thcentury) reinforcing assertion in order to com-municate, from the 18th century onwards, non-certainty. |
