La figura el flâneur y la ciudad moderna en la novela argentina del siglo XX

Abstract

El flâneur aparece como figura típica del ambiente metropolitano en el París de principio del siglo XX. Se trata de un personaje que gasta su tiempo en pasear por las calles y los bulevares de la capital francesa, observando con atención el ambiente circundante que está rápidamente cambiando a causa del advenimiento de las dinámicas capitalistas. La figura del flâneur entra con fuerza en la literatura gracias a las obras de varios escritores importantes, pero es sobre todo Baudelaire quien llegará a convertirla en una figura fundamental para la comprensión y el análisis del mundo moderno. El filósofo alemán Walter Benjamin, a su vez, estudia con detalle la figura desde varias perspectivas (histórica, sociocultural y literaria) e individualiza características esenciales que hacen del flâneur una figura extremamente compleja y que se confunde con otras: con el periodista y el detective por un lado, con el arqueólogo y el coleccionista por otro, manteniendo en todo caso una clara estatura heroica. El flâneur en el curso del siglo XX entra como personaje en numerosas novelas de distintos países, configurándose así como una herramienta indispensable para los novelistas a la hora de enfrentarse con el análisis, siempre actual, de la vida urbana. En Buenos Aires, ciudad que presenta varias características parecidas al París decimonónico, el interés hacia la metrópolis moderna es muy intenso, y son muchos los escritores que presentan en sus obras personajes que tienen claras características de flâneur. Objetivo de este trabajo es ofrecer una mirada analítica sobre la historia de la figura del flâneur y su evolución desde su aparición hasta finales del siglo XX y mostrar cómo algunos novelistas porteños de ese siglo han propuesto al flâneur como protagonista de sus obras. Los autores seleccionados son Roberto Arlt y Leopoldo Marechal, activos en la primera mitad del siglo, y Ricardo Piglia, que empieza a publicar sus obras en 1975; los tres manejan esta figura para proponer sus propias visiones del contexto ciudadano en el mundo moderno.

The flâneur appears as a typical figure of the metropolitan environment in Paris at the beginning of the 20th century. He is a character who spends his time strolling through the streets and boulevards of the French capital, observing with attention the surrounding atmosphere that is rapidly changing due to the advent of capitalist dynamics. The figure of the flâneur enters overpoweringly in literature thanks to the works of several important writers, but it is above all Baudelaire who turns it into a fundamental figure for the understanding and analysis of the modern world. The German philosopher Walter Benjamin, in turn, studies the figure in detail from various perspectives (historical, social, cultural and literary) and identifies essential characteristics that make the flâneur an extremely complex figure, which is confused with others: with the journalist and the detective on the one hand, with the archaeologist and the coll ector on the other, maintaining in any case a clear heroic stature. The flâneur in the course of the 20th century became a character in numerous novels from various countries, becoming an indispensable tool for novelists when faced with the ever-present analysis of urban life. In Buenos Aires, a city that presents several characteristics similar to those of nineteenth-century Paris, the interest in the modern metropolis is very intense, and many writers present characters in their works that have clear flâneur characteristics. The objective of this work is to offer an analytical look at the history of the figure of the flâneur and its evolution from its beginning until the end of the 20th century, and to show how some Buenos Aires novelists in that century have proposed the flâneur as the protagonist of their works. The authors selected are Roberto Arlt and Leopoldo Marechal, active in the first half of the century, and Ricardo Piglia, who began publishing his works in 1975; all three of them use this figure to propose their own visions of the citizen context in the modern world.
