Segunda Guerra Mundial. The article presents Jurij Lotman’s response to the question about the origins of Stalin’s famous mistake made in 1950 and concerning the derivation of the Russian “national” language from what he called “the Kursk-Orel dialect”. Among other things, according to Lotman, Stalin was influenced by Ivan Bunin’s work on many Russian writers born in this region. On the other hand, Stalin the linguist was clearly linked to Stalin the military leader: the battles in the region of Kursk-Orel were important for the Soviet victory in the war of 1941-1945. |
