In 17th century England, Latin and the classical authors gave way to the study of the English language. In the absence of normative works regulating the English language and its lexicon, grammars and dictionaries began to be published in order to provide the language with the rigour and systematicity of classical languages. One of the characteristics of these works is the profuse information contained on their title-pages, which was intended to attract the attention of potential buyers in an increasingly competitive publishing market. In this article I focus on one of the elements of the titlepages of 17th- and 18th-century English dictionaries, the epigraphs, which present sentences and extracts from classical authors. This study aims to identify the authors represented in these extracts, justify the selection of authors made and establish the function of these epigraphs, bearing in mind the educational context of England at the time. The use of the Proyecto excerpta, an online search engine for 16th-century school florilegia, has allowed us to discover that most of the texts of the epigraphs were found in school florilegia and anthologies that were widely used in 17th- and 18thcentury England. This fact has been paramount in determining that the presence of these epigraphs was not due to an intellectual and almost pedantic zeal of the lexicographers, but to their conviction that these texts would be recognizable by potential users and buyers of these works. |
