interpersonales armoniosas (Gao, 2008; Liu 2014).
Chinese culture is distinguished by its civility, courtesy, decorum and the tendency to suppress negative emotions in pursuit of maintaining harmonious interpersonal relationships (Gao, 2008; Liu 2014). Unlike Spanish culture, where there is greater freedom to exhibit them, their control in the Chinese community is especially noticeable when there is a difference in social distance (Gu, 1990).In order to observe the manifestation of the emotions of both cultures and study their adaptation to an academic context, we have done a descriptive analysisin which the emotions displayed were identified and classified according to Pekrun y Linnenbrink-García’s, (2012) taxonomy. For this purpose, we used a corpus of 100 emails written by native Spanish university students and ChineseSpanish-learning students who live in China or in Spain. The results suggest that the Chinese participants did not act according to the prototypical characteristics of their culture, nor did they conform to an appropriate register and style in academic Spanish. |
