- PublicationOpen AccessAlfabetización y autocrítica del comportamiento informacional mediante el humor gráfico de El Roto y Mauro Entrialgo(EPI SCP, Barcelona, Spain, 2012-05-06) Gómez-Hernández, José-Antonio; Información y DocumentaciónTaking advantage of political cartoons by El Roto and Mauro Entrialgo, the need for a critical use of information technology and the internet is presented. Information and communication technologies (ICT) have generated high hopes, being seen as tools to democratize knowledge and information. However, to make good use of their potential we must know their limits, what changes they generate in our behavior and how they affect our privacy, identity or personal relationships. The above mentioned cartoonists help to generate self-criticism of our information behaviour, fostering a rational information literacy, with a thoughtful and intentional use of technologies and networks.

- PublicationOpen AccessDe la formación de usuarios a la alfabetización informacional: propuestas para enseñar las habilidades de información(Universidad de Zaragoza, 2001) Gómez-Hernández, José-Antonio; Benito Morales, Félix; Información y DocumentaciónThe conceptual evolution of information services from user education entities to information literacy ones is analysed. Information literacy is understood in two senses. In the first one, it is the mastering of several skills to obtain, evaluate, use and communicate information through conventional and electronic ways. Secondly, it consists of the service and activities designed to achieve the teaching and learning of the concepts, procedures and attitudes related to information access and use. After formulating the concept of information literacy, several proposals for teaching of information abilities are developed, both in the Educational and in the Library Systems. In the Basic Educational System, besides the intensification of the didactic use of school libraries, it is necessary to provide the teachers with lifelong learning and training on this topic, and transform Information Literacy in a cross subject. In higher education, it is necessary to make use of web tutorials for training in the access and use of specialized scientific information, to intensify the cooperation of librarians and faculty, and to regulate user education, integrating it as much as possible as an optional subject in the curricula.
- PublicationOpen AccessLas metáforas del mundo de la información, y los bibliotecarios(El Profesional de la Información, 2008) Gómez-Hernández, José-Antonio; Información y DocumentaciónThis essay on librarians’ roles uses some of the metaphors used to talk about books and the information world as its theoretical approach. The purpose is to justify the role of the librarian as beacon and specially as educator: to teach, to facilitate or to mediate in order to help people improve their information skills for life in the information world, become information literate, and live with other people, training them and still being among them. For that reason we invented a new Spanish word, “entrenauta”, with which we synthesized this proposed role.
- PublicationOpen AccessPromotion through claiming centrality in L1 and L2 English research article introductions.(2018-07-04) Sadeghi, Karim; Jalil, AbdiMarketization in all public spheres, including academic discourse, has led to the increased importance of promotion. One of the promotional tools usually used in Research Articles Introductions (RAIs) is claiming centrality. In this study, we aimed to explore differences between native and non-native writers in the use of strategies for claiming centrality in Applied Linguistics RAIs. To this end, a corpus of 50 English RAIs (25 L1 and 25 L2) was analyzed in terms of the strategies used for claiming centrality. The analysis of the two sets of texts revealed that they are similar in the mean occurrence of centrality claims in general while in terms of the specific strategies used for claiming centrality, there are differences between them. The findings of this study can be used by instructors of writing courses to address promotion better as well as by article authors to report their research findings more convincingly.
