- PublicationOpen AccessAnálisis observacional de las acciones con balón de los delanteros centro en la UEFA euro 2020(Universidad de Murcia : servicio de publicaciones, 2026) Fernández-Sante, Daniel; Iván-Baragaño, Iyán; Maneiro, Rubén; Ardá, Antonio; Sin departamento asociadoThe objectives of this study were to analyze the offensive ball actions performed by center forwards in UEFA EURO 2020, to understand the relationship among various analyzed technical–tactical criteria and categories -including spatial, interactional, and intentional criteria-and the result of the action, and to establish a predictive model of the action results. To do so, 599 UEFA EURO offensive forwards actions were analyzed using observational methodology by means of an ad hoc observation instrument composed of 4 dimensions, 14 criteria and 129 categories, with an inter-observer reliability of κ = 0.842. Three types of analysis were carried out: a descriptive analysis by counting absolute and relative frequencies, a bivariate analysis using contingency tables between the criteria included in the observation instrument and the action result, and finally a predictive model based on binary logistic regression. The results obtained showed that the criteria modifying the result of the forwards' actions were: Area where the ball comes from (χ²= 140.3; p< .001; ES=.342), Area where the action takes place(χ²= 148.7; p< .001; ES=.352), Initial interaction context(χ²= 57.7; p< .001; ES=.219), Previous action(χ²= 78.2; p< .001; ES=.256), First-contact surface(χ²= 20.5; p= .002; ES=.131), Field area where the ball goes(χ²= 498;p< .001; ES=.645), Tactical intention(χ²= 73.9; p< .001; ES=.351), Action performed(χ²= 557.9; p< .001; ES=.682), and Final interaction context(χ²= 348.2; p< .001; ES=.539). From the multivariate approach, the logistic regression model has shown a predictive capacity of 80% when it came to predicting the ability of center forwards to maintain ball possession. The significant predictor variables were the Initial interaction context, the Tactical intention and theAction performed. These results can be useful when preparing and training for the specific position of the center forward as well as increasing their performanc
- PublicationOpen AccessComparison of home advantage in men’s and women’s Portuguese roller hockey league(Murcia: Servicio de publicaciones de la Universidad de Murcia, 2020) Arboix Alió, Jordi; Buscà, Bernat; Aguilera Castells, Joan; Trabal Taña, Guillem; Sánchez López, María JoséThe purpose of this study was to quantify the home advantage in both men’s and women’s Portuguese professional division roller hockey leagues comparing the results obtained according to the sex of participants. The sample was composed of 2,080 roller hockey games (n = 1,632 in First men’s division; and n = 448 in First women’s division) between the 2009-2010 and 2016-17 seasons. Goals scored and received were also analysed when teams play at home. The results showed the existence of home advantage in both men’s and women’s leagues. Home advantage values were higher than 50% in both leagues, with significantly higher values in the male league (60.88% compared to 54.33%). Moreover, the results indicated that teams score a higher percentage of goals when playing at home with non-significant differences between sexes. Regarding the number of goals scored per match, the results showed a significant difference between the male and female divisions, with higher values for men’s leagues. The results in relation to sex of participants are consistent with previous studies in other sports like football or water polo. The analysis of the home advantage could be useful to help roller hockey coaches to design alignments for each match and to plan the training loads according to match location.
- PublicationOpen AccessDesign, validation, and reliability of an observational instrument for technical and tactical actions in singles badminton(Frontiers Media, 2020-12-10) Torres-Luque, Gema; Blanca-Torres, Juan Carlos; Cabello-Manrique, David; Giménez Egido, José María; Ortega Toro, Enrique; Actividad Física y DeporteTechnical and tactical actions are decisive in terms of badminton player competitive performance. The main objective of this research was to design, validate, and estimate the reliability of an observational instrument for the analysis of the tactical and technical actions in individual badminton. The process was carried out in four different steps: first, there was a review of the scientific literature and a preliminary list of variables was made; second, a qualitative and quantitative assessment was completed by 10 badminton expert judges; in the third step, the content validity was estimated using Aiken’s V coefficient; finally, intra-observer reliability and interobserver reliability were tested by two observers specialized in badminton using the Cohen’s Kappa coefficient and the intraclass correlation coefficient. Strokes were used as the unit of measure by our observational instrument; every time badminton players hit the shuttlecock, 22 variables (eight contextual variables, seven variables related to the result of the match, and seven variables related to the game) are observed. The minimum Aiken’s value was 0.58, and reliability was 0.63. In spite of these values, none of the variables had to be removed, but there were modifications in terms of drafting in some of them. The main findings confirmed the validity and the usefulness of this instrument.
- PublicationOpen AccessDiferences between ofensive and defensive ratings of rookies and sophomores in the NBA basketball league(Murcia: Servicio de publicaciones de la Universidad de Murcia, 2017) Prieto Bermejo, JaimeTe purpose of this study was to analyse and compare the ofensive and defensive performance of rookies (frst-year players) and sophomores (second-year players) in the NBA basketball league, in order to ascertain whether a second year of experience in the league results in higher performances. We hypothesised to fnd overall higher ofensive and defensive performances in second-year players when compared to frst-year. Ofensive and defensive rating statistics for rookies and sophomores for seasons 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 were downloaded and fltered from the stats section of the NBA ofcial web portal for a total of 144 players under analysis. A multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) was computed. ‘Ofensive Rating’ and ‘Defensive Rating’ were used as dependent variables; ‘Level of Experience’ (rookie vs. sophomore) was used as independent variable. Te average number of minutes played by each player during the league was considered as a covariate. Contrary to what was hypothesised, although both ofensive and defensive ratings showed slightly higher values for second-year players when compared to frst-year players, the diferences were not statistically signifcant. Tese results suggest that one more year of experience in the league is not sufcient to signifcantly increase the performance of the players on their way from rookies to sophomores. Hence, the results might suggest that the road to excellence has begun to be travelled, with two seasons in the league still being insufcient to show signifcant diferences in the overall performance of these yet novice players.
- PublicationOpen AccessEffect of modification rules in competition on technical-tactical action in young tennis players (under 10)(Frontiers Media, 2020-01-07) Palao, José M.; Torres Luque, Gema; Giménez Egido, José María; Ortega Toro, Enrique; Verdú Conesa, Isidro; Actividad Física y DeporteAdapting competitions to young players' characteristics is an important pillar in the optimal teaching-learning process. The objective of the present study is to analyze the effect of modifying net height (from 0.91 to 0.80 m) and court dimensions (from 23.77 × 8.23 m to 18 × 8.23 m) for under-10 (U-10) tennis players on the following: (a) kinds of technical and tactical basic, situational, and special strokes; (b) tennis players' hitting area; (c) landing location of the serve; (d) ball landing location after the serve; (d) stroke effectiveness; and (e) rally length. The study design was quasi-experimental in nature, observing the fluctuation/change in technical-tactical variables of the tennis players when playing a "Tennis 10s Green Competition" (GC) with the current federative rules and a redesigned competition "Modified Competition" (MC) including altered net height and court dimensions based on small-sided games (SSGs) and equipment scaling. Twenty U-10 tennis players were studied (age of players = 9.46 ± 0.66 years, average weekly training in tennis = 2.90 ± 1.07 h, years of experience = 3.65 ± 1.53 years). The results showed that in MC, there was a greater technical-tactical variability compared with the GC in terms of the following: (a) greater service effectiveness; (b) more situational and special strokes; and (c) a more equitable change in the distribution of hitting and ball landing locations. The values of MC showed that the current adaptation rules and equipment in federated U-10 competitions might not be enough to improve the teaching-learning process under the comprehensive approach. The current competition for U-10 tennis players (stage green) should be redesigned, in order to build an optimal process of affordances to develop a multidimensional positive impact during this training stage.
- PublicationOpen AccessEffect of scaling task constraints on the learning processes of under-11 badminton players during match-play(MDPI, 2020-10-04) Blanca-Torres, Juan Carlos; Torres-Luque, Gema; Ortega Toro, Enrique; Giménez Egido, José María; Actividad Física y DeporteScaling equipment and the playing space according to junior badminton players’characteristics and needs is a key aspect to design optimal learning environments. The purpose of the study is to analyze the incidence of reducing the court size (from 13.40 m 5.18 m to 11.88 m 5.18 m) and net height (from 1.55 m to 1.30 m) for under-11 badminton players on the following technical and tactical variables: (a) service area; (b) stroke e ectiveness; (c) kinds of technical strokes; (d) players’hitting area; (e) shuttle landing area; (f) shuttle flight; and (g) rally length. Twenty-eight badminton players (mean age of players: 9.81 0.93) were selected and played a badminton competition (B) with the current federative rules and a mini-badminton competition (MB) with the altered net height and court dimensions. The results showed that a lower net height and a shorter court would increase the frequency and variability of strokes and play patterns, introducing quantifiable changes considered beneficial for children in their first stages, both in training and competition.
- PublicationOpen AccessEvaluación de la coherencia estratégico-táctica entre la preparación y el rendimiento de un equipo femenino de baloncesto(Universidad de Murcia : servicio de publicaciones, 2026) Monteiro, Alan; Rangel, Wellington; Fellingham, Gilbert; Heiner, Matthew; Lamas, Leonardo; Sin departamento asociadoIntegrative assessment of a basketball team combining the preparation phase and match performance is key for preventing coaches from misleading interpretations about outcomes. The goal of the study was to evaluate the coherence between team preparation and match performance in a women basketball team supported by data and considering the emphasis and efficiency on tactical contents. Coherence was evaluated based on the emphasis given to pre-defined basketball contents, and respective efficiency, during practices and match. Data were gathered a women’s college team (15 players; 20.0 ± 2.5 years old), in preparation for the national tournament. Team strategy was assessed from the season’s playbook. Practice data was gathered from the full pre-season period. Competitive performance was analyzed from a match. Bayesian methods were used to compute the posterior distributions of the parameters for time of training tasks. Set offense was emphasized more than transition during both practice and match, although their match efficiencies were similar. Team plays were prioritized over group tactics throughout practices (posterior mean difference: 42.3 min/week, SD: 10.1, 90% CI [25.8–58.9]) and in match performance, demonstrating higher efficiency. Our approach successfully traced preparation–performance coherence in a basketball team. Practices reflected a game-based approach that emphasized offense–defense integration and set offense supported by team plays. Coherence was demonstrated by the higher proportion of set offenses relative to transitions, both during practices and match. Similarly, a greater proportion and efficiency of team plays compared with individual or group actions. The approach should provide objective coaching support
- PublicationOpen AccessMultivariate analysis of goalkeeper actions in youth football(SAGE Publications, 2023-05-08) Jara, Daniel; Gómez-Ruano, Miguel Ángel; García Angulo, Francisco Javier; Ortega Toro, Enrique; Sainz de Baranda Andújar, Pilar; Actividad Física y DeporteThere is a lack of studies investigating youth goalkeepers that implement variables that can allow researchers and coaches to better understand the performances of the goalkeepers. For this reason, the aim of the present study was to identify key performance indicators of youth football goalkeepers both defense and attack. The sample was composed of 902 defensive and 896 offensive actions from a convenience sample of 32 matches of 19 teams from the Spanish National Championship of Regional Teams U12. A notational analysis was carried out using an ad hoc instrument to register the technical-tactical actions. Validity was higher than .84. In addition, intra-observer reliability was higher than .90. Classification tree analysis was used to investigate which variables were best predictors of technical actions in defense and precision in attack actions of the goalkeepers. Results showed that in the attacking phase the actions that achieve higher values of precision were those when the ball was played to zone A length and both right and left sides (X26 = 542.034; p=.000). In defense, when the goalkeeper achieve higher values of saves were those when the shot was taken from out of the penalty area and no jump or drop was performed. The present findings contribute to evidencebased practice in fostering young goalkeepers.
- PublicationOpen AccessShort-term effects of adding 1-m wide to each side of the basketball court on youth players’ performance(Murcia: Servicio de publicaciones de la Universidad de Murcia, 2020) Mateus, Nuno; Gonçalves, Bruno; Exel, Juliana; Esteves, Pedro; Sampaio, JaimeThis study aimed to identify short-term effects on basketball players’ physical responses, technical performance, and tactical behaviour when the court dimension is increased 1-m wide to each side. Fourteen youth players participated in 5 vs. 5 simulated basketball games, under two different conditions: regular court (28x15m) and wider court (28x17m, 1-m wider for each side). Besides the assessment of physical and technical indicators, positional data were also used to compute the following variables: distance to the nearest opponent, distance to the nearest teammate, stretch-index and distance between centroids. Results indicated that in the wider court condition, the dispersion of player’s displacement trajectories duringthe offensive phase increased, which had slight repercussions on their physical responses and in the teams’ playing patterns. Conversely, during the defensive phase, players tended to move within the regular spatial references, regardless of court width manipulation. Overall, this study emphasizes that short-term effects of changing the court dimensions are relatively negligible, suggesting that informational constraints might require longer time-scales to yield robust changes in players’ performance.
