- PublicationOpen AccessA Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Serum Adiponectin Measurements in the Framework of Dog Obesity(2020-09-14) Muñoz-Prieto, Alberto; Cerón, José Joaquín; Martínez-Subiela, Silvia; Mrljak, Vladimir; Tvarijonaviciute, Asta; Medicina y Cirugía AnimalAdiponectin is an abundant plasma protein that is closely related to obesity and obesity-related pathologies. The molecule can be found in three different isoforms, each with different biological activities. Studies on canine obesity have suggested that adiponectin concentrations are decreased in obesity; however, no canine meta-analyses have been performed that feature all the required data. The aim of this study is to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies that pertain to total and high molecular weight (HMW) adiponectin in relation to canine obesity. From 20 different studies, a total of 366 dogs with obesity and 349 normal weight dogs are included in the meta-analysis. Client-owned dogs were most represented, accounting for 54.3% of the dogs used, while experimental dogs enrolled in the studies made up the remaining 45.7%. The concentrations of total adiponectin in dogs with obesity were significantly lower compared with normal weight dogs. Additionally, adiponectin concentrations were significantly higher in dogs after a successful weight loss protocol compared to the start of the protocol and were significantly lower in dogs after gaining weight. In conclusion, although caution should be taken due to the relatively low number of studies that exist and the high heterogeneity between them, this meta-analysis indicates that adiponectin is decreased in obese dogs.

- PublicationOpen AccessAssociation of body mass index with clinical outcomes in patients with atrial fibrillation: a report from the FANTASIIA registryBertomeu-Gonzalez, Vicente; Moreno-Arribas, José; Esteve-Pastor, María Asunción; Roldan-Rabadán, Inmaculada; Muñiz, Javier; Raña-Miguez, Paula; Ruiz-Ortiz, Martín; Cequier, Ángel; Bertomeu-Martinez, Vicente; Badimón, Lina; Anguita, Manuel; Lip, Gregory Y.H.; Marin Ortuño, Francisco; MedicinaBackground-—Obesity and atrial fibrillation (AF) frequently coexist and independently increase mortality. We sought to assess the association between obesity and adverse events in patients receiving oral anticoagulants for AF. Methods and Results-—Consecutive AF outpatients receiving anticoagulant agents (both vitamin K antagonists and direct oral anticoagulants) were recruited into the FANTASIIA (Atrial fibrillation: influence of the level and type of anticoagulation on the incidence of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke) registry. This observational, multicenter, and prospective registry of AF patients analyzes the quality of anticoagulation, incidence of events, and differences between oral anticoagulant therapies. We analyzed baseline patient characteristics according to body mass index, normal: <25 kg/m2, overweight: 25–30 kg/m2, and obese: ≥30 kg/m2), assessing allcause mortality, stroke, major bleeding and major adverse cardiovascular events (a composite of ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, and total mortality) at 3 years’ follow-up. In this secondary prespecified substudy, the association of weight on prognosis was evaluated. We recruited 1956 patients (56% men, mean age 73.8 9.4 years): 358 (18.3%) had normal body mass index, 871(44.5%) were overweight, and 727 (37.2%) were obese. Obese patients were younger (P<0.01) and had more comorbidities. Mean time in the therapeutic range was similar across body mass index categories (P=0.42). After a median follow-up of 1070 days, 255 patients died (13%), 45 had a stroke (2.3%), 146 a major bleeding episode (7.5%) and 168 a major adverse ardiovascular event (8.6%). Event rates were similar between groups for total mortality (P=0.29), stroke (P=0.90), major bleeding (P=0.31), and major adverse cardiovascular events (P=0.24). On multivariate Cox analysis, body mass index was not independently associated with all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, stroke, major bleeding, or major adverse cardiovascular events. Conclusions-—In this prospective cohort of patients anticoagulated for AF, obesity was highly prevalent and was associated with more comorbidities, but not with poor prognosis.
- ItemOpen AccessAssociations of BMI and obesity with physical literacy, lung capacity, and cardiorespiratory performance in obese adult women(Universidad de Murcia: Servicio de Publicaciones, 2026) Kurniawati, Dewi Marfuah; Noer, Etika Ratna; Anggita, Gustiana Mega; Ahda, Zahrah Zakiya; Setyawati, Heny; Kinanti, Rias Gesang; Mukarromah, Siti Baitul; Sugiarto, Sugiarto; Susanto, Hendi; Agustina, Azkia; Ali, Mohammad Arif; Sin departamento asociadoThis study aimed to: (1) assess the level of physical literacy among obese adult women; (2) evaluate their lung capacity and cardiorespiratory performance; and (3) examine the interrelationships among these variables. A cross-sectional observational study was conducted involving 18 obese adultwomen in Tegal Regency, Central Java, Indonesia. Participants were assessed for Body Mass Index (BMI), physicalliteracyusing a validated 24-itemquestionnaire, lung capacityusing spirometry, and cardiorespiratory performance using the Six-Minute Walk Test (6MWT). The mean BMI of participants was 31.95±4.26 (Kg/m²), with an average physical literacy score of 76.21±10.01 (moderate level). Lung capacity (FVC) averaged 1.76±0.60 L, and the FEV1/FVC ratio was 82.14±16.63%. Participants completed an average 6MWT distance of 352.08±32.37 meters, indicating reduced cardiorespiratory performance (63.30±6.89% of predicted). Obesity level was significantly correlated with lung capacity, cardiorespiratory performance, and inversely with physical literacy (p<0.05). BMI showed significant negative correlation with physical literacy (p<0.05), but not with lung capacity (p>0.05). Most participants retained normal lung functiondespite obesity. Obese adult women in this study generally demonstrated moderate physical literacy and average lung and cardiorespiratoryfunction. Obesitylevel, more thanBMI alone, was a stronger predictor ofreduced lung capacity and physical performance. Findings highlight the importance of integrating physical literacy into gender-responsive obesity interventions.
- PublicationOpen AccessBody Composition, Physical Fitness, Physical Activity and Nutrition in Polish and Spanish Male Students of Sports Sciences: Differences and Correlations(MDPI, 2019-03-30) López Sánchez, Guillermo Felipe; Radziminski, Łukasz; Skalska, Maria; Jastrz˛ebska, Joanna; Smith, Lee; Wakuluk, Dorota; Jastrz˛ebski, Zbigniew; Ciencias SociosanitariasIt is important to study differences in body composition, physical fitness and lifestyle behaviours between university students from different countries to develop country- specific recommendations on health promotion to provide to students when transitioning to university. The present study aimed to analyse differences in body composition, physical fitness and lifestyle behaviours between Polish and Spanish students of Sports Sciences. One-hundred-and-eighty-six male students participated (81 from Poland and 105 from Spain). Polish males were on average 21.5 ± 1.9 yrs old and Spanish males 21.5 ± 2.5. The body composition variables measured were body weight (kg), fat-free mass (FFM, kg and %), fat mass (FM, kg and %), total body water (TBW, kg and %), basal metabolic rate (BMR, kcal), body mass index (BMI, kg/m2), fat-free mass index (FFMI, kg/m2) and fat mass index (FMI, kg/m2). The physical fitness variables measured were squat jump (SJ, height in cm, power in watts and w/kg), countermovement jump (CMJ, height in cm, power in watts and w/kg), running speed (10, 20 and 30 m (time in s)), and progressive aerobic cardiovascular endurance run (PACER, stage, final speed in km/h, distance in m, VO2max in mL/kg/min). Lifestyle variables measured were vigorous physical activity (VPA, days/week, min/week), moderate physical activity (MPA, days/week, min/week), walking (days/week, min/week), sitting (min/week), meals/day, vegetables/day, fruits/day, seafood/week, dairy products/week, sweets, chips, fast food/week, litres of liquid/day, litres of sugary drinks/day, alcohol/week and cigarettes/day. In comparison to Spanish students, Polish students had greater FFM (kg), greater TBW (kg), higher BMR, greater power in SJ, greater height and power in CMJ, lower times in running speed tests (10 and 20 m) and greater consumption of vegetables and liquids. In comparison to Polish students, Spanish students participated in more physical activity, and consumed more seafood, more dairy products, less sugary drinks, less alcohol and less tobacco. VPA and consumption of vegetables and liquids had positive influences on body composition and physical fitness. According to these results, universities should promote a healthy lifestyle in order to improve body composition and physical fitness in male students studying sport science. In the cases of Spain and Poland, special attention should be paid to the weak points detected in this study. This would be useful for avoiding future risk of diseases such as obesity or diabetes.
- PublicationOpen AccessBody mass index, comorbid conditions, and demographic factors among tertiary healthcare workers in Kosovo: Implications for physical activity interventions(Universidad de Murcia. Servicio de Publicaciones, 2025) Hoti, Flaka; Shehu Kaqi, Merlinda; Terziqi, Hasime; Shehu, Myhidin; Sin departamento asociadoThis study aimed to determine the prevalence of overweightness and obesity among healthcare workers (HCWs) at the University Clinical Center of Kosovo in Pristina, Kosovo, and to examine the relationship between demographic variables, comorbid conditions, and body mass index (BMI). This was a retrospective, descriptive, analytical study. The study population consisted of 3048 HCWs at the University Clinical Center of Kosovo in Pristina, Kosovo. The sample consisted of all HCWs who were willing to provide his/her BMI (n = 1399) and included 717 females (51.25%) and 682 males (48.75%) with an average age of 48.16±10.46 years. Biochemical and hematological tests were carried out. BMI and blood pressure were assessed. The prevalence of overweight and obesity class I was 49.1% and 19.8%, respectively, according to WHO criteria, where overweight is defined as BMI 25.0–29.9 and obesity class I as BMI 30.0–34.9. Males were found to have a higher mean BMI compared to females (p=0.01). Hypertension, dyslipidemia, and hyperglycemia were found to be statistically significant with BMI (p<0.01) while type II diabetes was insignificant (p=0.05). Age was associated with type II diabetes (p<0.05) and hypertension (p=0.05); sex was significantly associated only with hyperglycemia (p<0.05). With an increase in age for both sexes, the rates of obesity and overweight increased, especially from ages 45 to 54 in HCWs. BMI was a significant predictor of hypertension (p<0.01, OR=1.45), dyslipidemia (p<0.01, OR=1.42), and hyperglycemia (p<0.01, OR=1.48). These results indicate the need for increased physical activity in order to reverse obesity-related health problems and obtain better health among HCWs.

- PublicationOpen AccessChildren with obesity have poorer circadian health as assessed by a global circadian health score(Springer, 2024-06-08) Rodríguez Martín, María; Martínez Lozano, Nuria; Santaclara Maneiro, Vicente; Gris Peñas, Antonio; Salmerón Martínez, Diego; Ríos, Rafael; Tvarijonaviciute, Asta; Garaulet Aza, Marta; Ciencias Sociosanitarias; FisiologíaBackground Circadian health refers to individuals’ well-being and balance in terms of their circadian rhythm. It is infuenced by external cues. In adults, a close relationship between circadian-related alterations and obesity has been described. How ever, studies in children are scarce, and circadian health and its association with obesity have not been evaluated globally. We aimed to assess whether circadian health difered between children with and without obesity as determined by a global circadian score (GCS) in a school-age population. Methods Four hundred and thirty-two children (7–12 years) were recruited in Spain. Non-invasive tools were used to calcu late the GCS: (1) 7-day rhythm of wrist temperature (T), activity (A), position (P), an integrative variable that combines T, A, and P (TAP); (2) cortisol; and (3) 7-day food and sleep records. Body mass index, body fat percentage, waist circumference (WC), melatonin concentration, and cardiometabolic marker levels were determined. Results Circadian health, as assessed by the GCS, difered among children with obesity, overweight, and normal weight, with poorer circadian health among children with obesity. Children with obesity and abdominal obesity had 3.54 and 2.39 greater odds of having poor circadian health, respectively, than did those with normal weight or low WC. The percentage of rhythmicity, a marker of the robustness of the TAP rhythm, and the amplitude, both components of the GCS, decreased with increasing obesity. Diferent lifestyle behaviors were involved in the association between circadian health and obesity, particularly protein intake (P=0.024), physical activity level (P=0.076) and chronotype (P=0.029). Conclusions The GCS can capture the relationship between circadian health and obesity in school-age children. Protein intake, physical activity level, and chronotype were involved in this association. Early intervention based on improving circadian health may help to prevent childhood obesity.
- PublicationOpen AccessCircadian transcriptome oscillations in human adipose tissue depend on napping status and link to metabolic and inflammatory pathways(Oxford University Press, 2024-07-12) Rodríguez Martín, María; Pérez Sanz, Fernando; Zambrano, Carolina; Luján, Juan; Ryden, Mikael; Scheer, Frank A. J. L.; Garaulet Aza, Marta; Fisiología; Facultades de la UMU::Facultad de BiologíaStudy Objectives Napping is a common habit in many countries. Nevertheless, studies about the chronic effects of napping on obesity are contradictory, and the molecular link between napping and metabolic alterations has yet to be studied. We aim to identify molecular mechanisms in adipose tissue (AT) that may connect napping and abdominal obesity. Methods In this cross-sectional study, we extracted the RNA repeatedly across 24 hours from cultured AT explants and performed RNA sequencing. Circadian rhythms were analyzed using six consecutive time points across 24 hours. We also assessed global gene expression in each group (nappers vs. non-nappers). Results With napping, there was an 88% decrease in the number of rhythmic genes compared to that in non-nappers, a reduction in rhythm amplitudes of 29%, and significant phase changes from a coherent unimodal acrophase in non-nappers, towards a scattered and bimodal acrophase in nappers. Those genes that lost rhythmicity with napping were mainly involved in pathways of glucose and lipid metabolism, and of the circadian clock. Additionally, we found differential global gene expression between nappers and non-nappers with 34 genes down- and 32 genes upregulated in nappers. The top upregulated gene (IER3) and top down-regulated pseudogene (VDAC2P2) in nappers have been previously shown to be involved in inflammation. Conclusions These new findings have implications for our understanding of napping’s relationship with obesity and metabolic disorders.
- PublicationOpen AccessClustering patterns of physical fitness, physical activity, Sedentary, and dietary Behavior among school children(SAGE Publications, Mary Ann Liebert, 2020-12-02) López-Gil, José Francisco; Brazo-Sayavera, Javier; García-Hermoso, Antonio; Camargo, Edina María de; Yuste Lucas, Juan Luis; Expresión Plástica, Musical y DinámicaBackground: Some healthy lifestyle behaviors may have a greater impact on childhood obesity in combination, compared to the independent effects of those behaviors in an isolated manner. The present study aimed to identify the different healthy lifestyle patterns of children according to their physical fitness, physical activity (PA) patterns, screen time, and adherence to the Mediterranean Diet, as well as to examine the association between anthropometric indicators and the membership to a certain cluster. Methods: A final sample of 353 Spanish school children (45.9% females) from the Region of Murcia (Spain) was included in this study (aged 6–13). First, we conducted a hierarchical cluster analysis using Ward’s method; based on squared Euclidean distances. Second, we used the k-means cluster analysis to get the final cluster solution. Results: Three different clusters were established: Cluster 1 [high cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), PA, and Mediterranean Diet], Cluster 2 (low CRF, PA, and Mediterranean Diet + high muscular strength), and Cluster 3 (low physical fitness and PA). Cluster 3 had negative values in all the health-related variables analyzed. Regarding the anthropometric parameters analyzed (BMI, triponderal mass index, waist-to-height ratio, and body fat percentage), Cluster 3 presented the highest values in all anthropometric parameters than the other two clusters ( p < 0.001), while Cluster 1 showed the lowest values. Conclusions: The study has identified three clusters respect to health-related variables with the higher prevalence in the cluster established as the unhealthiest lifestyle. Also, cluster classification is associated to obesity indicators such as BMI, tri-ponderal mass index, waist-to-height ratio, and body fat percentage.

- PublicationOpen AccessD-mannose reduces adipogenesis by inhibiting the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway(Universidad de Murcia, Departamento de Biologia Celular e Histiologia, 2023) Lin, Haozhi; Li, Xin; Zhao, Jiping; Wang, Lei; Liu, Yizhen; Gao, CuiPurpose. To explore the effects and potential mechanisms of D-mannose on adipogenic differentiation of two kinds of representative mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Methods. We cultured two kinds of representative MSCs, human adipose tissue-derived stromal cells (hADSCs) as well as human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs), with adipogenic-induced medium containing D-mannose or D-fructose as the control. Oil red O staining, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), and western blot (WB) were used to detect whether D-mannose had effects on adipogenic differentiation of MSCs. RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) transcriptomic analysis was further used to explore the potential mechanisms of D-mannose on adipogenic differentiation of MSCs. After that, qRT-PCR and WB were used to verify the results of RNA-seq. Last, we removed bilateral ovaries of female rats to establish an estrogen deficiency obesity model, and gave D-mannose intragastric administration. One month later, the femurs of rats were sliced for oil red O staining, and the inhibitory effect of D-mannose on lipid formation in vivo was studied. Results. Oil red O staining, qRT-PCR and WB in vitro demonstrated that D-mannose inhibited the adipogenic differentiation of both hADSCs and hBMSCs. Oil red O staining of femur sections proved that D-mannose was able to reduce in vivo adipogenesis. The results of RNA-seq transcriptomic analysis revealed that the adipogenesis-inhibition effects of D-mannose were performed by antagonizing the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. Besides, qRT-PCR and WB further verified the results of RNA-seq. Conclusion. Our study indicated that D-mannose was able to reduce adipogenic differentiation of both hADSCs and hBMSCs by antagonizing the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. D-mannose is expected to be a safe and effective treatment strategy for obesity.

- PublicationOpen AccessDiet: a specific part of the western lifestyle pack in the asthma epidemic(MDPI, 2020-07-01) Frontela Saseta, María del Carmen; García-Marcos Álvarez, Luis Vicente; González Bermúdez, Carlos Alberto; Tecnología de Alimentos, Nutrición y BromatologíaThe Western lifestyle is a complex concept that includes the diet as the main axis of di erent factors which contribute to a detrimental e ect on health, lower life expectancy and low quality-of-life. This type of diet is characterized by being high in calories, mainly provided by saturated fats, and rich in sugars that can lead to changes in immune cells and their responsiveness, by di erent mechanisms that have yet to be totally clarified. Inflammatory processes are perpetuated through di erent pathways, in which adipose tissue is a major factor. High fat stores in overweight and obesity accumulate energy but the endocrine function is also producing and releasing diferent bioactive compounds, adipokines, known to be pro-inflammatory and which play an important role in the pathogenesis of asthma. This review therefore explores the latest evidence regarding the adverse e ect of theWestern diet on adipose tissue inflammation and its causative e ect on the asthma epidemic.

- PublicationRestrictedEffect of a chronotype-adjusted diet on weight loss effectiveness: a randomized clinical trial(Elsevier, 2020-04) Galindo Muñoz, J.S.; Díaz Soler, I.; Barberá Ortega, M.C.; Martínez Cáceres, J.J.; Hernández Morante, Juan José; Gómez Gallego, María; Atención SociosanitariaBackground & aims: The alteration of normal biological rhythms, also known as chronodisruption, may be associated with obesity development. For instance, those subject with preference for vespertinity seem to be prone to develop obesity. However, the current hypocaloric dietary treatment of obesity does not take into account these aspects. Therefore, the objective of this trial was to evaluate whether a diet adjusted to patient's chronotype is more effective that the current dietary recommendations. Methods: 209 subjects take part on a 3 month randomized, double-blind trial. 104 subjects followed a typical hypocaloric dietary treatment and the other 105 subjects undergone a diet with a daily caloric distribution adjusted to their chronotype. There were no sex or age differences between groups. Results: Baseline characteristics were similar in both groups. Dropout rate was also similar in both in terventions (p ¼ 0.683). Although both groups improved their anthropometrical parameters, the chronotype-adjusted diet group achieved a statistically significant greater reduction in percentage of total body weight loss (%TWL), BMI and waist circumference than the control group (p < 0.010 in all contrasts). The effect on clinical parameters was less pronounced. Conclusions: This randomized trial has demonstrated for the first time that in overweight/obese subjects, a chronotype-adjusted diet is more effective than the traditional hypocaloric dietary treatment, at least regarding the anthropometrical parameters. Further research will confirm if this intervention is also more effective in the long term.
