- PublicationOpen AccessCan Microplastics Influence the Accumulation of Pb in Tissues of Blue Crab?(MDPI, 2021-03-30) Munuera, Paula; Salvat-Leal, Inmaculada; Belmonte, Antonio; Romero, Diego; Ciencias SociosanitariasThe study of microplastics (MPs) and associated pollutants is essential for a better under standing of some of the factors that threaten marine ecosystems. The main objective of this study was thus to assess Pb distribution and accumulation in the tissues of blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus) exposed to MPs. Blue crabs were collected from the mouth of the river Segura (Guardamar, Spain) and fed on mussels from two Mediterranean areas with different levels of Pb contamination: Portmán Bay and San Pedro del Pinatar (Murcia, Spain). In addition, a batch of each group were exposed to MPs. After seven days of exposure, the crabs were euthanised, and tissues and faeces were analysed. The hepatopancreas was found to be the best tissue for measuring Pb concentrations after feeding; muscle tissue did not provide information on environmental quality. The meat (mus cle) consumption of blue crabs from zones with high Pb content does not seem to constitute a risk for consumers, although the risk is not totally negated if all soft tissues are ingested. The presence of MPs in the water does not seem to increase the accumulation of Pb in these tissues of C. sapidus

La filosofía de Gilles Deleuze aplicada a la obra artística de Francis Bacon.(Universidad de Murcia, Servicio de Publicaciones, 2020) Biondi, ValeriaEste artículo expone el concepto del devenir-animal de Gilles Deleuze en el arte de Francis Bacon. Se trata de un pasaje peculiar que no termina y no empieza nunca, es una particular condición del ser humano, algo que pasa a través de nuestro propio cuerpo y expresa la deformación de este. Analizaremos el idioma filosófico que Deleuze emplea para describir este arte, un arte hecho de sensación y no de imitación. El extranjero, el intruso es alguien que parece vivir en los protagonistas que viven en las pinturas de Bacon; pronto descubrimos que, según la filosofía del pintor, solo podemos ver una zona indiscernible, esta es la sensación que vive entre el hombre y el animal.
- PublicationOpen AccessEfecto del manejo previo al sacrificio sobre la calidad de la carne de ganado bovino de lidia(Facultad de Veterinaria y el Servicio de Publicaciones de la Universidad de Murcia, 2023) Lomillos, Juan Manuel; Olías Camero, María; Alonso, Marta ElenaEl ganado de Lidia se produce mayoritariamente en régimen extensivo lo que confiere a su carne de un valor añadido sostenible y se caracteriza por una baja cantidad grasa. Se trata de una raza de difícil manejo y comportamiento con tendencia a sufrir estrés lo que dota a su carne de características entre las normales y las oscuras, duras y secas: DFD. En el presente trabajo se ha realizado un estudio sobre la calidad de la carne de diferentes razas, con el objetivo de valorar la influencia que tienen sobre la calidad de la carne los factores: raza, edad, sexo y manejo del ganado en las instalaciones de un matadero. Se ha recopilado información de 154 animales bovinos, 79 de la raza de Lidia y de 75 individuos pertenecientes a razas mansas. Se ha medido el pH de la canal tras del sacrificio y después de 24 horas de maduración y se han buscado lesiones de diferente origen sobre la piel y la musculatura, cuantificándolas y clasificándolas. Se han observado diferencias en los parámetros estudiados que muestran como la raza de Lidia se distingue del resto en los aspectos relacionados con su comportamiento agresivo que dificulta su manejo en las instalaciones del matadero, registrando casi la totalidad de las lesiones en la canal por traumatismos, fundamentalmente en los individuos mayores de 3 años. Sin embargo, no existen diferencias entre razas para el pH registrado en los dos momentos post- sacrificio, si bien existe un menor pH posterior al sacrificio de las hembras de razas mansas frente a los machos. Por último, la edad podría influir en el pH de la carne, describiendo un mayor pH a las 10 h de maduración en los individuos de más de 5 años
- PublicationOpen AccessPrice Fluctuation, Protected Geographical Indications and Employment in the Spanish Small Ruminant Sector during the COVID-19 Crisis(MDPI, 2020-11-26) Vidaurreta, Irene; Orengo Femenia, Juan; De la Fe Rodríguez, Christian; González, José María; Gómez-Martin, Ángel; Benito López, Bernardino; Sanidad AnimalThis work assesses milk and meat price fluctuations from small ruminants during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) crisis in Spain, using o cial data provided by the Interprofessional Dairy Organization (InLaC) and a representative sample of agricultural markets fixing prices per kilogram of lamb and goat kid meat. Data showed a drop in meat and goat milk prices during the period of confinement, which is only maintained for goat milk over the three following months. Similarly, analysis of data from the most important production areas, involving three protected geographical indications (PGI) of lamb meat, suggested that this quality label had a beneficial e ect on sales and price stability in times of crisis. On the other hand, despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Spanish labor market, the small ruminant sector did not seem to be a ected in terms of the number of workers when comparing the period before and after the pandemic. All these factors are of interest for producers when making decisions regarding the management of flocks and adapting their marketing strategies for a down market or unexpected volatile circumstances.
- PublicationOpen AccessShort-Term Economic Impact of COVID-19 on Spanish Small Ruminant Flocks(MDPI, 2020-08-05) Vidaurreta, Irene; De la Fe, Christian; Orengo, Juan; Gómez-Martín, Angel; Benito, Bernardino; Sanidad AnimalThe human pandemic COVID-19 has rapidly spread around the world, leading to extreme control measures such as population confinement and industries activity closure, including tourism and restauration. Although small ruminants are not sanitary a ected, this situation might cause a negative economic impact on Spanish flocks. The data analyses provided by producers and slaughterhouses in the initial 60 days after COVID-19’s pandemic declaration, showed that while the dairy goat flocks su ered a substantial drop in milk prices, this impact was not seen in sheep milk, which remained almost stable. A price drop for lambs or goat kids was also reported. These data are in agreement with the unexpected drop of lambs and goat kids’ sacrifices in April, as reported by some slaughterhouses. We registered a short-term negative economic impact on Spanish small ruminant’s flocks after COVID-19’s pandemic declaration in the country. The long-term economic consequences still need to be studied to establish contingency plans for this type of sanitary crisis.
