This article presents the results of multidisciplinary research carried out over the past few years within the framework of various archaeological research projects promoted by the Museu d’Arqueologia de Catalunya-Empúries and in collaboration with other institutions. These projects have included the archaeological excavation of different sectors of the site, as well as numerous geophysical, geological, and geomorphological surveys, and other investigations focused on the paleoenvironmental reconstruction of the landscape. The particularities of the Empúries landscape, historically characterized by the Ter and Fluvià rivers, with extensive areas of marshland and lagoons, and subject to constant changes in the configuration of the coastline and coastal space, were decisive in the creation and development of the different population nuclei that, over the centuries, formed the archaeological site of Empúries.
