    Crimson Peak (2015): a reinterpretation of Wuthering Heights

    Wuthering Heights, Emily Brontë’s sole novel, has not only earned the status of a literary “classic” but has also wielded considerable influence over the centuries. It has become an extremely popular trope for Western culture whether through songs, cinematic adaptations, or literary references. Following an examination of the concepts within the field of adaptation studies and a proper categorization of the work itself, this BA thesis will delve into Guillermo del Toro’s movie Crimson Peak and the reasons why it could be considered a reinterpretation of Wuthering Heights. An exhaustive analysis of both works will be provided, where the Gothic and its main tenets, the characters’ intertextuality and the resemblances behind their roles and psychology will be examined, in order to highlight how both works are intricately connected through these nuanced thematic parallels and narrative echoes. A new perspective on del Toro’s work will show us how Gothic romance and ghost stories remain a part of our entertainment through the centuries which provides the spectator with productive fodder for interpretation based on cultural and literary knowledge

    La reivindicación femenina en la narrativa de Emily Brontë y Anna L’Estrange: el caso de Isabella Linton y Margaret Earnshaw.

    En este trabajo partimos del concepto de diseminación cultural brontëana, acuñado por Stoneman en 1995 en el que los lectores de Wuthering Heights han propuesto nuevas versiones cinematográficas, musicales o secuelas literarias. En 1977, Anna L’Estrange publica su propia sequela de la novela de Emily Brontë, Return to Wuthering Heights. En este estudio se pretende realizar un estudio comparativo de dos personajes femeninos en la narrativa brontëana. Más detalladamente, analizaremos al personaje de Isabella Linton en Wuthering Heights (1847) y posteriormente nos centraremos en el paralelismo de la historia de Margaret Earnshaw en la continuación propuesta por L’Estrange (1977). Ambas escritoras unen las dos historias a través del personaje de Heathcliff y su sucesor, Jack. E. Brontë se centra en el personaje de Isabella Linton que sufre maltrato físico y verbal. También L’Estrange, denuncia socialmente el maltrato y la violación a la que debe enfrentarse el personaje de Margaret Earnshaw. El propósito de este estudio es analizar la indefensión social a la que deben enfrentarse estos dos personajes femeninos y descubrir como ambas autoras pretenden reivindicar el papel de la mujer en la sociedad y denunciar la violencia de género a través de la narrativa.
