Age and type of instruction (CLIC vs. traditional EFL) in lexical development
    (2016-06-28) Agustín-Llach, María Pilar
The present paper compares the vocabulary development of a group of CLIL and of traditional EFL learners along three years. The observation that a CLIL approach might provide with larger benefits in the long run vocabulary is the starting point of this study. We had learners in the two groups complete a letter writing task. These writings were then scrutinized for L1 influence in the form of borrowings and lexical creations. The frequency of the words in the letters was also object of analysis. Results revealed that CLIL learners perform slightly better but non-significantly better than traditional EFL along the three years. Furthermore, the evolution of L1 influence and word use also followed an expected improvement pattern as learners went up grade. However, our results do not provide evidence of a growing CLIL advantage with increasing experience. The young age and low proficiency of learners in the present study might be blocking this possible advantage found elsewhere.

Analysis of CLIL teaching sequences for Primary Education
(Universidad de Zaragoza, Asociación Universitaria de Formación del Profesorado (AUFOP), 2022) Estrada Chichón, José Luis; Segura Caballero, Natalia
This work deals with a meta-evaluation of the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) teaching sequences (N=46) for Primary education provided by the Andalusian Consejería de Educación, Spain, in German and English. The objective is to present an analysis of the sequences concerning the integration of CLIL methodological principles throughout the theory-based reviews by pre-service teachers (n=42) who attended (2020-21) the subject AICLE I: Fundamentos y Propuestas Curriculares para el Aula de Primaria in German or in English of the Bachelor’s Degree in Primary Education at the University of Cádiz. This is a mixedmethods research with an exploratory sequential design, in which the CIPMA questionnaire (Custodio and García Ramos, 2020) was adapted to evaluate the sequences. Also, a focus group was carried out along with a significant representation of informants. The results reveal that, although the average evaluations of the sequences vary according to the foreign language (German: 1.78; English: 3.72), the order of scoring of the questionnaire dimensions is almost identical: Elementos Fundamentales de AICLE or Metodología; Recursos; and Evaluación. Nonetheless, the sequences do not integrate some CLIL methodological principles: resources (teaching materials related to real-life situations; the use of ICT to promote interaction and self-learning; etc.) and assessment (simplification or reduction of the content; summative and formative evaluation strategies; etc.). The difficulty of some activities is noteworthy as well as the inadequate treatment of the target languages, mainly German, regarding primary school students’ linguistic skills

Child task-supported interaction in the Spanish EFL setting: research and challenges.
(2019-01-21) García Mayo, María del Pilar
Task - based language teaching research has expanded substantially in foreign language (FL) contexts but most research studies have been carried out with young adults in university settings, despite the fact that FL programs for children are on the increase worldwide. However, there is a clear lack of research - based evidence of what children actually do while performing tasks, which is cruc ial in order to make decisions about appropriate educational provision, to inform policy makers, and to maximize children's learning opportunities. This paper focuses on current research on children in task - based programs both in mainstream English as a Fo reign Language (EFL) and Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) contexts. It reviews studies that show how children successfully negotiate to make language meaningful, how they engage with the tasks and how they collaborate in different ways durin g task performance. Challenges and future research directions will be highlighted.

Exploring the Pedagogical Potential of Didactic Audiovisual Translation in Plurilingual Pre-school Education : the Perspective of Pre-service Teachers
(Universidad de Zaragoza, Asociación Universitaria de Formación del Profesorado (AUFOP), 2024) Fernández Costales, Alberto; Bobadilla Pérez, María; Lertola, Jennifer
Introduction: This study investigates the perception and pedagogical viability of Didactic Audiovisual Translation (DAT) in plurilingual education among pre-service pre-school teachers, using mixed methods. It explores the effectiveness of DAT—didactic free commentary in particular—for language acquisition, as well as its suitability for fostering Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and contributing to the improvement of foreign language proficiency. Despite previous research on DAT, there is a shortage of studies focused on early childhood education, underscoring the relevance of this work. Methodology: The study involves 103 pre-service teachers and utilizes questionnaires and focus groups to analyze the benefits, challenges, and opportunities of integrating DAT into CLIL practices. Results: Overall, the findings underline participants’ confidence in the capacity of free commentary to enrich the educational experiences of their future students, while acknowledging associated challenges and emphasizing the ongoing need for exploration and refinement for effective integration. Discussion: The findings suggest adapted approaches for plurilingual instruction in pre-school and highlight areas for future research in this educational field. The integration of DAT into CLIL offers opportunities to promote plurilingualism and enhance linguistic and cultural competence.

How does CLIL affect the acquisition of reading comprehension in the mother tongue? A comparative study in secondary education
(Asociación Española de Comprensión Lectora, 2017) Nieto, Esther
In the last two decades, CLIL (content and language integrated learning) programmes, in which school subjects such as history, geography or mathematics are taught by means of an additional language, have rapidly spread over all the world, since CLIL has been deemed to be an innovative and effective approach for second language learning. Therefore, research on CLIL has precisely focused on the acquisition of the L2, while other aspects, such as the assimilation of the content taught by means of the second language or the impact of CLIL programmes on the mother tongue have received less attention. In this sense, this paper examines how CLIL programmes affect the development of reading comprehension in the mother tongue. To do so, the outcomes in a test of reading comprehension of CLIL (n = 1,119) and non-CLIL students (= 15,984) enrolled in the 2nd year of secondary education (13-14 years-old) were compared. The results indicated that the acquisition of literal reading comprehension and inferential reading comprehension in the mother tongue significantly benefit from CLIL, whereas no significant differences have been detected in critical reading comprehension. The reading skills most benefited by CLIL were global comprehension, lexical comprehension, understanding of space-time relationships, integration of extra-textual information, and identification of extra-textual relations. These data are explained by the critical importance of reading strategies to succeed in CLIL settings, and by the transfer of these strategies between L1 and L2 and vice versa. This hypothesis is supported by previous research on immersion programmes.

The impact of CLIL on the acquisition of L2 competences and skills in primary education
(2016-12-12) Nieto Moreno de Diezmas, Esther
The aim of this paper is to provide new evidence on the effectiveness of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) in the acquisition of English language competences (reading, writing, listening and spoken production and interaction) compared to traditional learning of English as a foreign language (EFL) in primary school settings. To do so, results of CLIL and non-CLIL learners enrolled in the 4 th year of primary education (9-10-year-olds) were examined and contrasted. Findings showed that the only communicative competence in which differences in favour of CLIL students were significant was spoken production and interaction. However, significant differences have also been detected in the following indicators: "preparing an outline before writing" (writing), "understanding space-time relations" (reading), and "global comprehension" and "identification of details" (listening). The confined effectiveness of CLIL may be due to the limited time of extra exposure to English, the young age of participants and the absence of any selection process for CLIL learners.
