- PublicationOpen AccessErosión y desertificación.-Contaminación de suelos por “metales pesados” en la sierra minera de Cartagena-La Unión y su entornoBelmonte Serrato, F.; Rojo López, S.; Romero Díaz, A.; Moreno Brotons, J.; Alonso Sarría, Francisco; Universidad de MurciaABSTRACT This paper analyzes the metal pollution in natural, agricultural and mineral-industrial soils in the Sierra of Cartagena-La Union and its adjacent area. The analysis was conducted on 52 soil samples randomly selected and 23 samples from the bed of the channels draining to the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean sea. The results indicate high concentrations of metals that exceed, in many cases, the maximum allowable by the relevant laws of various countries, including Spain. Of note is the excessive contamination by lead (Pb) and Cinz (Zn) that doubles or even triples the maximum of the most permissive laws.
- PublicationOpen AccessModelización en Geografía Física.-Evolución espacio-temporal de variables climáticas en la Cuenca del Río Segura en el periodo 1976-2007Gomariz Castillo, Francisco; Alonso Sarría, Francisco; Universidad de MurciaABSTRACT This work developes a methodology to analyse the spatio-temporal distribution of the must important climatic variables controlling environmental and socioeconomic processes in river Segura basin. A global multiple regression model is applied to interpolate climatic variables. Using as independent variables distance to sea, height aspect, easting and northing. In cases where it is not possible to use a global model, local interpolation procedure will be used (krigging, IDW or splines). The methodology has six stages: 1) selection of stations, 2) data filtering and gep filling after an homogeinity test, 3) estimation of parameters for a regression model, 4) interpolation, 5) validation and 6) evolution analysis.
- PublicationOpen AccessMorfología Fluvial.-Caracterización morfométrica en cuencas hidrológicas afectadas por la mineríaMoreno Brotóns, J.; Alonso Sarría, Francisco; Romero Díaz, A.; Belmonte Serrato, F.; Universidad de MurciaABSTRACT The intensive exploitation in the mining district of Cartagena - La Unión during recent centuries has generated a huge amount of waste scattered throughout the Sierra Minera. These debris act as a dangerous pollution agent in the drainage network because the generated runoff erodes and disperse these wastes that are highly contaminated by heavy metals. In this way, the drainage networks of the study area have been characterized to assess the production of runoff in basins which are sterile deposits, using the method of the Geomorphological Unit Hydrograph (GUH). The peak flows that have been obtained, taking into account the erodibility of soils, are capable of carrying large amounts of pollutants into the two main outlet areas (Mar Menor and Mediterranean Sea), meaning an important source of pollution in two sites of high ecological value.
